Daniel Walton, the national secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union, says it will seek to subpoena Jobs Minister Michaelia Cash to appear before a hearing into a police raid on the union’s offices in October 2017. The AWU also wants to subpoena Cash’s former media adviser, David De Garis, who resigned after admitting that he told the media about the raid, as well as the Fair Work Ombudsman’s former media director, Mark Lee. The latter has denied leaking details of the raid to De Garis.

Newcrest in dark on Cadia restart

Original article by Matt Chambers
The Australian – Page: 21 : 16-Mar-18

Analysts have scaled back their 2017-18 production forecasts for Newcrest Mining’s Cadia gold mine after the company advised that it is uncertain when production will resume. Peter O’Connor of Shaw Stockbroking expects output for the fiscal year to be about 570,000 ounces following the collapse of a tailings dam wall. Full-year output at the mine had been slated to be within the range of 680,00 to 780,000 ounces. Newcrest CEO Sandeep Biswas says the cause of the incident remains unknown, and it does not appear to be linked to recent seismic activity.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has advised that the Federal Government’s Future Fund will be exempt from Labor’s proposed changes to the dividend imputation system. He says exempting the sovereign wealth fund from the reforms will have no net impact on the Budget, while adding that the fund’s ability to meet future public sector pension liabilities could have been affected if it were denied access to cash refunds for unclaimed dividend imputation credits.

Media companies and the Law Council of Australia have raised further concerns about the Federal Government’s foreign interference laws in new submissions to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Intelligence & Security. The media industry argues that the bill is "deeply flawed" and it should be completely redrafted. The Law Council in turn has argued that the definition of some key terms in the draft bill need to be clarified, including "national security" and "news media".

Maile Carnegie, the ANZ Bank’s group executive for digital banking, forecasts that the four major banks will no longer dominate the Australian market within 5-10 years, with banks opting to focus on certain segments of the market. She also forecasts a greater role for technology in delivering banking services, while banks that provide services that customers actually want will be the most successful in future.

No hurry to unwind BHP stock split: UBS

Original article by Matt Chambers
The Australian – Page: 22 : 16-Mar-18

A report from UBS concludes that BHP Billiton would be better off retaining its dual-listed structure for now, noting that abolishing it would have implications in terms of taxes and franking credits. The firm concludes that there may be a case for scrapping the dual listing in three years’ time, when BHP has exhausted its tax credits. A recent analysis by FTI Consulting on behalf of activist hedge fund Elliott Management concluded that the financial benefits of shifting to a primary listing in Australia could be worth around $US22bn ($A28bn) for BHP.

Age of intending retirees increasing

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 16-Mar-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which was carried out in the year to December 2017, has found that the average age of Australians intending to retire in the next 12 months is 61.9 years, up from 58.2 years over the last three years. Despite this increase in the average age of intending retirees, their number continues to increase and is currently 415,000, up from 392,000 in 2014 and 326,000 in 2008. The survey also shows that since 2008, the average age of females who intend to retire has increased by 6.3 years to 61.3 years, while males showed an increase of only 2.9 years to 62.0 years. This more rapid increase in retirement age for females is likely to be at least partly as a result of the increasing awareness that they generally have a lower level of retirement funding than males and as a result they need to work longer.

More than 2.2 million intend to purchase a new vehicle but what fuel?

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 16-Mar-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source Survey, which was carried out in the three months to December 2017, shows that 2.26 million Australians aged 14+ intend to purchase a new vehicle in the next four years. This compares with 2.29 million for the same period in 2016, which led up to the record new cars sales in 2017. A further indication that 2018 is looking very positive for new vehicle sales is the fact that the number of people who intend to buy a new vehicle in the next year has risen by 44,000 (7.7%) to 614,000. Meanwhile, there is an increasing level of interest in alternative fuels to petrol among Australians who intend to buy a new vehicle over the next four years. Only 61.9% think that their next vehicle will most likely have a petrol engine. Alternatives to petrol all showed higher preference levels among intenders compared to their share of current sales, with diesel 5.3% higher on 29.2%, hybrid (petrol and electric) higher by 4.7% (to 5.2%), fully electric higher by 3.0% (to 3.1%) and LPG 0.6% higher (to 0.6%).

Traditional Internet measurement systems have recently hit three problems: Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), HTTPS pages and Facebook Instant Articles. Roy Morgan’s Internet measurement system Roy Morgan Live Audience Evaluation solves all three so website owners, advertisers and agencies can measure and monitor website and digital advertising audiences with confidence that they are getting the true answers. It allows any business with an online presence to install a ‘pixel’ – a short line of invisible code – on any website page or digital advertising in order to measure and profile digital audiences. The pixel, in conjunction with a panel of 19+ million devices and sophisticated data science and accelerated analytics, enables near real-time measurement of de-duplicated reach and in-depth profiling of the people engaging with a website or digital campaign without compromising the privacy of any individuals.

Independents licking their lips at chance to play kingmaker

Original article by Luke Griffiths
The Australian – Page: 8 : 15-Mar-18

There is growing speculation that the South Australian election on 17 March could result in another hung parliament. Labor was able to form government in 2014 with the support of independent MP Geoff Brock. He could potentially decide the next state government, along with fellow independent Troy Bell, if neither of the major political parties gain a majority in the lower house. Brock and Bell say they would be open to an alliance in the event of a hung parliament, but add that they have not held any formal discussions.
