Energy prices double in year

New figures show that the average wholesale spot energy price in South Australia has risen to nearly $A170 in January 2018, compared with $A84 during the same period in 2017. The average spot price in Victoria has risen from just $A62 to $A139 over the last 12 months. Energy experts warn that more power blackouts and electricity price hikes can be expected due to the state governments’ focus on renewable energy targets rather than ensuring a reliable baseload energy supply.

Original article by Jenny Wiggins

Linfox chairman Peter Fox says the trucking company is keen to investigate the use of electric trucks, particularly for its Armaguard business. Tesla has revealed plans for an electric truck that could run at maximum weight for 500 miles before needing to be recharged. Fox says there would need to be a lot more charging stations available before Linfox could consider using electric trucks, while he does not think that governments should subsidise the use of electric vehicles.

The head of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s retail banking division, Matt Comyn, will succeed Ian Narev as CEO in April. His remuneration will be 15 per cent lower, with a base salary of $A2.2m plus short-term and long-term incentives. Comyn’s appointment follows a global search for Narev’s successor, and CBA chair Catherine Livingstone says Comyn had the board’s full support. CBA’s retail banking division has attracted scrutiny over a money-laundering scandal, but Livingstone stresses that it was a company-wide issue.

Terra Capital founder Jeremy Bond is upbeat about the outlook for equities in 2018, particularly the resources sector. The firm’s natural resources fund achieved a return of 74 per cent in 2017, benefiting from rising demand for raw materials used in electric car and storage batteries, such as lithium and cobalt. However, Bond notes that the rally in the resources sector is broad-based and encompasses most commodities.

The Age – Page: 1 : 30-Jan-18

A report produced by the Australia Institute’s Centre for Future Work shows that there has been a 97 per cent decline in industrial action since the 1970s. The author of the report, Jim Stanford, says the sharp decline in industrial action has contributed to the low growth in wages over recent years. However, Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry CEO James Pearson argues that a range of other factors affect growth in wages, while ACTU secretary Sally McManus says Stanford’s report highlights the need for industrial relations reform.

Atlas irons out a profit problem

Original article by Paul Garvey
The Australian – Page: 19 : 30-Jan-18

Shares in Atlas Iron shed more than 16 per cent to close at $A0.026 on 29 January, after the iron ore miner advised that its Pilbara operations posted a cash loss of $A1.2m during the December 2017 quarter. Atlas Iron’s net cash position fell to $A104m at the end of the quarter, amid a sharp rise in the price discount for lower-grade iron ore. CEO Cliff Lawrenson says Atlas Iron’s daily operations are making money despite the price discount. He adds that the expected closure of Cliffs’ Koolyanobbing iron ore mine later in 2018 could create new supply opportunities for Atlas.

The Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility will use Rio Tinto’s upcoming shareholders’ meetings in London and Melbourne to lobby the resources group to review its membership of the Minerals Council of Australia. Rio Tinto is said to have similar concerns as BHP Billiton regarding the MCA’s stance on issues such as climate change and coal-fired power generation. BHP will decide whether to retain its MCA membership by the end of 2018, in response to lobbying by the ACCR.

Job growth brings end to nation’s income recession

Original article by Jacob Greber
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 29-Jan-18

Leading economists Chris Richardson and Saul Eslake say a number of factors suggest that Australian wages will begin to rise after 18 months of stagnant growth. They cite factors such as strong growth in jobs during 2017 and a growing shortage of skilled labour. Eslake also notes that real net national disposable income per capita is now increasing at a faster pace than real gross domestic product per capita. He adds that while wages growth appears to have bottomed, the official unemployment rate of 5.5 per cent will need to fall before there is sustained growth in wages.
