Citigroup estimates that Rio Tinto’s $9.9bn deal to acquire Arcadium Lithium will generate annual synergies of about $125m. The firm expects Arcadium shareholders to back the deal, contending that the downturn in the price of the battery mineral means that is it is currently cheaper to buy lithium assets rather than build new mines. The deal will make Rio Tinto one of the world’s biggest lithium producers, and CEO Jakob Stausholm says he believes that the transaction is a "risk worth taking". He has also rejected suggestions that Rio Tinto is paying too much for Arcadium.

Aldi the most trust supermarket as Coles, Woolies fend off fake discount claims

Research from Roy Morgan shows that Aldi is Australia’s most trusted supermarket brand in 2024, having risen from third place in 2023. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says Aldi’s rise in the firm’s Trusted Brand Awards reflects factors such as the increased distrust of grocery giants Woolworths and Coles in the wake of recent scandals such as allegations of price gouging; Levine adds that consumers have responded positively to Aldi’s competitive pricing and commitment to quality. Woolworths and Coles are now the fourth and fifth most distrusted brands, according to Roy Morgan.

How we die in Australia

Original article by Shane Wright
The Age – Page: Online : 11-Oct-24

Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the nation recorded a total of 183,131 deaths in 2023. This is more than four per cent lower than the previous calendar, which is primarily due to a sharp fall in the number of deaths from COVID-19. The number of deaths from heart disease – which has been the biggest cause of death in Australia for at least six decades – fell to 16,922. In contrast, the number of deaths from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease rose to 16,685; Lauren Moran from the ABS says current trends suggest that this will become the leading cause of death in Australia in coming years. She cities factors such as the nation’s ageing population and improvements in medical care and treatment.

Watt seeks CFMEU Please explain

Original article by Ewin Hannan
The Australian – Page: 4 : 11-Oct-24

Workplace Relations Minister Murray Watt will ask CFMEU administrator Mark Irving why he has given Joel Shackleton a job in the union’s Victorian branch. A CFMEU organiser, Shackleton has been charged with threats to kill a labour hire company owner, and is due to face court over the charges on 22 November. Employers and the Opposition contend that Shackleton should be stood down, claiming that Irvine’s decision to let him keep working with the CFMEU does not send a good message at a time when the federal government is seeking to clean up the construction sector.

Opposition’s calls to change question time for Melbourne Cup labelled ‘ridiculous

Original article by Sezen Bakan
The New Daily – Page: Online : 11-Oct-24

Question time in federal parliament on 5 November is due to run from 2pm to 3pm, with the Melbourne Cup to be run on the same day at 3pm. Liberal MP Dan Tehan has described the schedule conflict as "un-Australian", and the Opposition is said to be pushing for question time on that day to be held at 10am instead. Bill Browne, director of the Democracy & Accountability Program at the Australia Institute, says he thinks most Australians would feel parliament sitting is more important than politicians watching the Melbourne Cup live. Australian National University and Griffith University Emeritus Professor in political science John Wanna has described the Opposition’s call to change question time to suit the Melbourne Cup as "ridiculous".

May poll firms as Labor sets its budget date

Original article by Jack Quail
The Australian – Page: 4 : 11-Oct-24

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has frequently reiterated that the current parliament will run for its full term and he will not call an early election. The draft parliamentary sitting schedule for 2025 suggests that he still intends to go to the polls in May, given that Labor has pencilled in 25 March to hand down the budget. This would make 3 May the earliest possible date for an election, while the Constitition requires it to be held no later than 17 May. Meanwhile, Labor has advised that parliamentary inquiry into nuclear energy is slated to deliver its final report by the end of April; building seven nuclear power plants will be part of the Coalition’s election platform.

China to restart lobster trade in big breakthrough

Original article by Tom McIlroy
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 6 : 11-Oct-24

Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook has welcomed the announcement that China will lift its restrictions on the importation of Australian rock lobsters, saying WA’s rock lobsters are the best in the world. The decision was confirmed by Chinese Premier Li Qiang in talks with the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Laos on Thursday. China’s move to lift its ban on rock lobsters brings to an end four years of trade restrictions that were imposed on $20 billion worth of Australian agricultural exports after the former Coalition government called for an independent inquiry into the source of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Labor in a two-state daydream

Former Queensland premier Peter Beattie says the public debate on the current conflict in the Middle East has been hijacked by extremists. The Labor stalwart has also criticised the federal government’s stance on Israel, as well as its broader policies regarding the Middle East; he contends that a two-state solution will never happen unless the enemies of Israel accept the nation’s right to exist. Beattie has also responded to the government’s call for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon by arguing that unless all parties agree to a comprehensive peace plan it will merely be a "pause before the next battle".

Impressively, 14 of the winners have built on their wins over the last two years and completed three straight victories as the most Trusted Brands in their respective categories. Additionally, five new brands are celebrating their first Trusted Brand Awards.
