Biologists at Washington University in the US state of Missouri have developed a procedure for detecting signs of malaria in infected people’s breath. They trialled their procedure on patients in a children’s clinic in Malawi. When breath samples were returned to the US for testing, it was found they had correctly diagnosed 83 per cent of those already known to be carrying the disease as a result of blood tests. Australian researchers have previously observed high levels of certain chemicals being exhaled by malaria sufferers.

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: Online : 7-Nov-17

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has called for all federal politicians to declare to the parliament that they are not dual citizens as a way of resolving the current citizenship saga. However, he continued to resist calls for a citizenship audit of federal MPs, as has been sought by the minor parties. Turnbull’s proposal would apply to both sitting and new MPs, with new MPs being required to make declarations within 21 days of being sworn in. Supporting documentation would be required by MPs when making their declaration.

Upwards of 20 ASX-listed companies are looking for gold in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. They are being buoyed by comparisons being made between the discoveries made to date there and the Witwatersrand formation in South Africa; the latter region has produced half the world’s gold to date. Some of the more prominent companies involved in the "Pilbara gold rush" include Artermis Resources, De Grey Mining and Calidus Resources. The last named company’s activities in the region include the exploration of two leases held by Haoma Mining, with an option to acquire them.

The Australian Shareholders’ Association has urged Harvey Norman shareholders not to vote for the re-election of chairman Gerry Harvey and two other directors at its AGM on 16 November. If the nominated three directors are re-elected, the ASA contends Harvey Norman will no longer have an independent board as from December. Under its guidelines, any director that has been on a board for more than 12 years is no longer deemed independent. The ASA also plans to vote against Harvey Norman’s remuneration report, while it will also urge Wesfarmers’ shareholders to vote against its remuneration report at its AGM, to be held on the same day.

However, staff there have agreed to forgo around 20 per cent of their take-home wages if another company agrees to acquire the factory and keep it open. TasAsia Dairy is interested in acquiring the plant, and National Union of Workers’ official Neil Smith says it, the NWU and the plant’s more than 100 workers have entered into a preliminary agreement that would see it remain open.

The Fair Work Commission has upheld an unfair dismissal claim against mining company South32. The company had dismissed Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union delegate Matthew Gosek as a result of his use of abusive language and physical threats against eight co-workers. In upholding Gosek’s challenge against his dismissal, FWC Commissioner Bernie Riordan noted Gosek had been affected by a combination of alcohol and anti-depressants at the time, and that bad language was commonplace in the workplace. Industrial relations lawyer Stuart Wood says the FWC’s decision could be seen as condoning union bullying.

The Public Relations Institute of Australia has urged the federal government to overturn its ban on 457 visas for staff in the public relations industry. PRIA president Jenny Muir says other related sectors, including marketing and communications, have been similarly impacted by the ban, which she says was implemented without any consultation with the PR sector. A spokesperson for the federal Immigration Department says its next review of the occupations list will be made in January 2018.
