The deadline to submit bids for Ten Network is believed to be 18 August, with the aim of finalising a deal by the end of the month. US private equity firms and hedge funds are among those to have expressed interest in buying Ten, while the network’s acquisition by Lachlan Murdoch and Bruce Gordon would be conditional on cross-media ownership reforms being passed by the Senate. Meanwhile, industry observers note that Ten’s new owners will face a number of challenges, including a decline in the free-to-air advertising market.

Listed furniture retailer Nick Scali has posted a 2016-17 net profit of $A37.2m, which is 42.4 per cent higher than previously, while revenue rose by 14.7 per cent to $A232.9m. The Australian Payments Network has stated that more than $A175 million worth of online payments in 2016 were the result of domestic identity fraud, an increase of 28 per cent. One victim of this type of fraud was an ANZ executive, whose stolen drivers’ licence information was used to fraudulently secure a $A30,000 loan from Westpac. The head of the Black Economy Taskforce recently stated that widespread identity theft is "systemically undermining" Australia’s banking and financial systems.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission is concerned that BP is not as competitive as Woolworths when it comes to fuel pricing. The ACCC is considering BP’s proposed $A1.8 billion purchase of Woolworth’s petrol stations, which was announced at the end of 2016. If the deal goes ahead, it would make BP the largest fuel retailer and wholesaler in Australia. BP Australia president Andy Holmes says it is keen to work with the ACCC to address any concerns it may have about the transaction.

Slap for exemptions in Labor ‘tax grab’

Original article by Joe Kelly
The Australian – Page: 5 : 11-Aug-17

The Federal Opposition has been attacked over its plans to exempt farmers from its proposed crackdown on the taxation of discretionary trusts. Labor has claimed that its proposed changes will raise $A17 billion over 10 years. Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says the exemption of farmers is warranted on the grounds that their income fluctuates. However, Small Business Minister Michael McCormack says the same argument could be made for small business owners, and Labor is not planning to exempt them from its changes.

The Australian Securities & Investments Commission may be contemplating action against Commonwealth Bank of Australia directors in regard to its money-laundering problems. Lawyers suggest that there could be certain areas that ASIC could focus on when considering such action, including the level of the CBA’s disclosure concerning AUSTRAC’s allegations against it. CBA chair Catherine Livingstone has been told that the Federal Government is still considering its options in regard to what actions to take against the bank.

Glencore has posted 68 per cent growth in EBITDA for the first half of 2017, to $US6.74bn, while its net debt has fallen by 11 per cent to $US13.9bn. CEO Ivan Glasenberg says the diversified resources and commodity trading group is always looking at potential acquisitions, and it would consider another bid for Rio Tinto’s Hunter Valley coal mines if Yancoal Australia’s $US2.69bn deal to buy the assets is blocked. Yancoal trumped Glencore’s own bid.

The Australian sharemarket has not risen significantly so far in August 2017, despite some good results during the reporting season. Carsales.com and Orora are among the stocks to have rallied in the wake of positive earnings reports, while the Commonwealth Bank, AGL and AMP have been sold down. Karen Jorritsma of Citigroup notes that capital management has been a major influence on share price movements during the current reporting season.

It’s Official: Sydney Morning Herald is still Australia’s most widely read masthead and Australians continue to embrace the shift to digital news

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 11-Aug-17

Roy Morgan Research has released the latest Readership report for Australian Newspapers for the 12 months to June 2017. Some 12,913,000 Australians aged 14+ (64.8 per cent) now read or access newspapers in an average 7-day period either in print, or online via website or app. This is virtually unchanged from a year ago. While cross-platform audiences are steady, the latest results show that growing numbers of Australians are choosing to consume their news via digital platforms rather than through the traditional print format. Over the past 12 months nine of Australia’s leading mastheads have increased their digital readership, while only three have increased their print readership. "The Sydney Morning Herald" is the most widely-read masthead, with cross-platform readership of 4,235,000, up 3.8 per cent from a year ago; the increase was driven by an increase in digital readership that more than offset the loss of print readers.

PM bid to block super union

Original article by Simon Benson
The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 11-Aug-17

The Fair Work Commission is expected to issue a ruling on the proposed merger between the Construction, Forestry, Mining & Energy Union and the Maritime Union of Australia by the end of 2107. However, the Federal Government hopes to block the merger by seeking an amendment to the Fair Work (Registered Organisations Act) that would require the FWC to subject union mergers to a public-interest test. The CFMEU has criticised the move, but representatives of the mining and resources sector have lobbied the Government to block the merger.
