Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had stated on 19 July 2017 that high efficiency low emissions (HELE) coal-fired power stations could help Australia to meet its emission goals set out in the Paris climate agreement. However, when asked on the following day at the Economic and Social Outlook conference whether the Federal Government would be prepared to help finance the construction of such plants, he said he would prefer if the market decided whether HELE plants had a place in Australia’s future energy mix.

Woodside Petroleum’s production in the June 2017 was 3.3 per cent lower than the March quarter, at 20.7 million barrels of oil equivalent. Sales revenue was 3.1 per cent lower at $US867m. The downturn has been attributed to scheduled maintenance work at the Pluto LNG project and an unplanned outage at the Karratha LNG plant. Meanwhile, Woodside has proposed investing an additional $US5bn ($A6bn) in the Karratha plant to keep it operational for another two decades and use it to process third-party gas.

Macquarie Wealth Management says the nation’s four major banks should have no difficulty meeting the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority’s revised capital targets, given that their capital increased by between 30 and 50 basis points during the first half of 2016-17. The new minimum requirements for common equity tier-one capital were less onerous than had been forecast, which prompted renewed investor support for bank stocks on 20 July.

Nine Entertainment Company CEO Hugh Marks has told a parliamentary inquiry into Australia’s film and TV industry that the cost of buying overseas TV programs has risen due to competition from public broadcasters. He said SBS in particular is outbidding commercial networks for international content, and he has questioned the relevance of some of these programs to SBS’s charter. Meanwhile, the Ten Network has urged the Federal Government to abolish content quotas for children’s TV programs.

Professor Bob Gregory has told a conference in Melbourne that the Federal Government appears to be hoping that increased tax revenue will restore the Budget to surplus. He also noted that it had not been able to reduce expenditure in terms of its share of GDP, although it is managing to control it. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told the conference that he hopes to reintroduce legislation to have the company tax lowered to 25 per cent by the end of 2017, while he noted that the government has prevented around 500,000 taxpayers being placed in a higher tax bracket by increasing the second-highest tax threshold by $A7,000.

Fortescue Metals Group has advised that a native title ruling is unlikely to affect production at its Solomon iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The Federal Court has ruled that the Yindjibarndi people are entitled to exclusive native title rights over a large area of land in the state, including the site of the Solomon mine. The Yindjibarndi could potentially be entitled to compensation of around $A100m for royalties from the mine. Fortescue shares closed 3.5 per cent lower at $A5.19 in response to the judgment.

BHP Billiton has restated its 2016 financial accounts after conceding that there were problems with the processes it had used to determine the impairment charges on US shale assets. Ross Illingworth, the executive director of Kingfisher Capital Partners, says the admission will strengthen Elliott Management’s case for a restructuring at BHP. Meanwhile, Elliott has likened BHP’s proposal to develop the Jansen potash project in Canada to its ill-fated foray into US shale.

Job surge adds to dollar’s strength

Original article by David Rogers
The Australian – Page: 30 : 21-Jul-17

The Australian dollar peaked at a two-year high of $US0.7989 in local trading on 20 July, in response to data showing that 62,000 full-time jobs were created in June. The economy added a net 14,000 jobs, due to a sharp fall in part-time positions, and the unemployment rate was steady at 5.6 per cent. Capital Economics’ Katie Hickie says the Reserve Bank is likely to leave official interest rates on hold until at least the end of 2018, arguing that growth in wages will be limited by excess capacity in the labour market.
