The independence of KordaMentha as administrator of the Ten Network has come under scrutiny by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission and the Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association. The issue centres on KordaMentha’s role as an adviser to Ten prior to its collapse. ASIC and KordaMentha have supported a proposal for Peter Gothard of Ferrier Hodgson to undertake an independent investigation into whether the fees received by KordaMentha constituted a preference payment.

Migrants a boon for workforce

Demographer Peter McDonald says total employment grew by 730,000 between 2011 and 2016, with migrants accounting for 600,000 of the new jobs. McDonald, from the University of Melbourne, says it is incorrect to state that migrants are stealing jobs from people who were born in Australia, nor are they taking jobs from those who are unemployed. Australia’s annual migrant intake is upwards of 200,000 a year, and former prime minister Tony Abbott believes that immigration levels need to be reduced.

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 17-Jul-17

A special Roy Morgan telephone survey has found that in mid-2017, 31% of Australians regard Terrorism & War as the biggest problems facing the World. This has nearly doubled since March, up by 15%, while also up 8% from a year ago. Although Terrorism & War is the dominant World problem in mid-2017, other major themes to emerge on a global level were Environmental issues led by Climate change and Global warming, which was mentioned by 21% of respondents, and Economic issues (mentioned by 18% of respondents). Analysing the question by Age and Gender shows that Women (33%) are more concerned about Terrorism & War than Men (29%), while older age groups are clearly more concerned about these issues than younger Australians. Australians aged 65+ are the most concerned about Terrorism & War – over 48% mentioned the issues as the biggest problem facing the World, far higher than any other age group.

JB Hi-Fi is the latest company to disclose that it has not reduced its Sunday and public holiday penalty rates in line with the Fair Work Commission’s ruling, which took effect on 1 July. CEO Richard Murray says the listed retailer’s staff is one of its most important assets. He stated earlier in 2017 that while JB Hi-Fi has no issue with paying penalty rates, it believes that similar rates should apply on Saturdays and Sundays. Chemist Warehouse, My Chemist, Kikki.k and Lush have also declined to reduce penalty rates for existing employees.

Cory Bernardi says his recently formed Australian Conservatives party now has close to 13,000 members across the country, including around 2,500 in Victoria. It will become formally registered as a political party in Victoria on 17 July, having already been registered federally and in Bernardi’s home state of South Australia. The party is targeting voters on the centre-right side of the political spectrum who are not happy with the Liberal Party, but would be reluctant to vote for One Nation’s Pauline Hanson.

Representatives of Elliott Management have met with BHP Billiton’s institutional shareholders in Australia, as the activist US hedge fund continues to push for a restructuring of the resources group. Australian Foundation Investment Company MD Ross Barker notes that Elliott has drawn attention to BHP’s long-term underperformance, while Matthew Haupt of Wilson Asset Management has welcomed the "constructive debate" on the best use of BHP’s funds. Data from OzTAM shows that the Seven Network has won 25 of the 28 weeks so far in the 2017 TV ratings season. Seven’s director of programming Angus Ross is not unduly concerned about the ratings success of the Nine Network’s "Australian Ninja Warrior", noting that Seven is leading in all of the core age demographics. He is also upbeat about Seven’s program line-up for the second half of the year.

‘End civil war or Libs will lose’

Original article by Rosie LewisSarah Elks
The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 17-Jul-17

Liberal Party of Australia president Nick Greiner has warned that the Coalition will lose the next federal election if the current disunity continues. He has urged Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and predecessor Tony Abbott to resolve their differences, but stresses that it is up to them to take the initiative rather than wait for a third party to intervene. Greiner notes that the Government’s achievements are being undermined by the infighting, which is providing a distraction for voters.
