There is speculation that the Commonwealth Bank could seek to have Ten Network placed in receivership in coming days. Meanwhile, Ten’s administrator Mark Korda has told the first creditors’ meeting that several local and offshore parties have expressed interest in buying or recapitalising Ten. CBS has been suggested as a possible buyer of Ten. Lachlan Murdoch and Bruce Gordon have been touted as likely buyers, but could not do so under existing media cross-ownership rules.

Karl Siegling of Cadence Asset Management does not think the federal and South Australian bank levies will have too great an impact on Macquarie Group’s earnings. On the issue of taxes, Morgan Stanley predicts that Macquarie will benefit from President Donald Trump’s plans to reduce US corporate taxes, while Bloomberg notes that analysts expect Macquarie to record a 2018 profit of $A2.3 billion.

Ten chairman sold down stake

Original article by Darren Davidson
The Australian – Page: 23 : 26-Jun-17

Ten Network chairman David Gordon is likely to come under scrutiny amid revelations that he reduced his stake in the TV broadcaster from 247,500 shares in 2015 to 29,433 in 2016. Ten’s administrator KordaMentha is also under scrutiny over its relationship as an adviser to Ten in the months prior to its collapse. Meanwhile, Ten had advised in early 2017 of a 5.6 per cent downturn in the metropolitan advertising market, only two months after issuing an earnings downgrade. It is uncertain whether Ten’s board undertook modelling at this time on the potential impact on cashflow if the advertising market deteriorated further.

Canberra has legal doubts on SA bank tax

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 5 : 26-Jun-17

The South Australian Government’s levy on the big four banks and Macquarie Group is expected to raise around $A100 million per annum. The tax is additional to the levy that was recently announced by the federal government. Federal minister Christopher Pyne has attacked the SA levy on the grounds that the state government offers no form of guarantee to the banks, thus admitting that the federal levy is in return for it providing a guarantee to them.

Australian-listed real estate investment trusts have become increasing popular with exchange-traded funds in recent years, according to Angelo Scasserra of Credit Suisse. Scentre, Stockland, Goodman and Mirvac are among the A-REITs to have attracted funds from ETFs, which Scasserra says are a very passive category of investors. He also says ETFs are very "reactionary", leading to potential share price volatility within the A-REIT sector.

Dismissal actions crippling business: IPA

Original article by Joe Kelly
The Australian – Page: 4 : 26-Jun-17

The Institute of Public Affairs claims that Australia’s unfair dismissal laws serve as a discentive for businesses to hire staff. IPA research indicates that the number of unfair dismissal claims lodged with the Fair Work Commission exceeded 18,000 in 2015-16, compared with fewer than 6,000 in 2005-06. The IPA’s Gideon Rozner says unfair dismissal claims take an unnecessarily long time to process, while FWC determinations are often contradictory. He contends that many businesses are paying complainants cash just to get them off their back.

Unions need to argue wage rises drive growth, says Swan

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 26-Jun-17

Former federal treasurer Wayne Swan says the Australian Labor Party and the union movement need to better argue the case for improved wages for middle-class workers. Swan will tell the annual ACTU congress that he fears that the Australian middle-class will become like the fast-disappearing US middle-class if wages do not rise. Swan’s comments follow those recently made by Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe, who said employees need to be more forceful when it comes to asking for wage rises.

Data from the Reserve Bank shows that Australia’s household debt-to-income ratio is currently at a record 189 per cent. Meanwhile, the Bank for International Settlements notes that the Australian economy is one of several that have high levels of household debt which would be vulnerable in the event of a sharp rise in interest rates. The BIS report also notes that the cost of servicing this debt is already having an impact on economic growth.

Australians’ Concerns

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 26-Jun-17

A special Roy Morgan study has examined Australians’ attitudes towards issues facing Australia and the World. The survey, which was carried out from 22-24 May 2017, shows that 38% of Australians identified Economic Issues (including Unemployment, Housing affordability, the Economy in general, Poverty and the gap between the rich and poor) as the most important problems facing Australia. When considering the wider World, the largest theme to emerge was about concerns related to War & Terrorism. These issues, including the more general fears about safety and security, were mentioned by 31% of Australians. Single-issue analysis of the responses shows that the specific issue of greatest concern for Australia is unemployment (mentioned by almost 9% of respondents). The single biggest World problems are Terrorism and Climate change/Global warming, with both issues mentioned by just under 17% of respondents.

Yancoal tipped to match Rio bid by Glencore

Original article by James Thomson
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 18 : 26-Jun-17

Peter O’Connor of Shaw & Partners says Rio Tinto’s sale of its Hunter Valley coal assets will be a good deal for shareholders, as the bidding war between Glencore and Yancoal continues. Glencore has sought to trump Yancoal by increasing its own offer, which is now $US255m higher than Yancoal’s offer of $US2.45bn. Rio Tinto recently named Yancoal as preferred bidder, and its board is likely to respond to Glencore’s revised offer on 26 June. Meanwhile, analysts expect Rio Tinto to use the proceeds of the sale to increase its 2017 dividend.
