Officeworks is diversifying away from its traditional office products market as it prepares for Amazon’s arrival in Australia. MD Mark Ward says the areas that it is looking to expand into include parcel delivery, art supplies and business processing, and that the value of the current and potential markets that it is looking to operate in is around $A55 billion. Ward says he was "not disappointed" by parent company Wesfarmers’ decision not to proceed with an initial public offering for Officeworks.

Adani coal bid clears native title hurdle

Original article by Andrew Tillett
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 9 : 15-Jun-17

The Senate has passed amendments to the Native Title Act to overturn the Federal Court’s decision in the McGlade case. The court had ruled that an indigenous land use agreement would not be valid unless it was signed by every registered native title claimant, rather than just a majority of traditional owners. The McGlade ruling had major implications for Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland. Some traditional owners oppose the project and intend to press ahead with legal action in a bid to stop it from proceeding.

Manufacturing Australia has warned that the Federal Government’s proposed LNG export controls are unlikely to have much impact on gas prices on the east coast. Its submission to the Government has backed the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism, but it argues that the resources minister should be given greater power to intervene in the gas market. Meanwhile, Fereidun Fesharaki of FGE has forecast a sharp fall in the price of crude oil, which will in turn impact on LNG producers given than the LNG price is linked to the oil price.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield says the Ten Network’s descent into voluntary administration has demonstrated the need for cross-media ownership reforms. Meanwhile, the struggling free-to-air broadcaster could potentially be privatised after shareholders Lachlan Murdoch and Bruce Gordon joined forces to develop a plan to refinance Ten. Their combined stake in Ten exceeds 22 per cent, but the joint venture arrangement does not breach media ownership or takeover laws.

Clean coal or bust for PM’s plan

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 15-Jun-17

Business and industry leaders have called for bipartisan support in federal parliament for a clean energy target in order to provide certainty on energy policy and ensure that electricity remains affordable. Meanwhile, the Federal Government is likely to include clean coal as a low-emissions energy source in any CET, despite certain opposition from the Australian Labor Party and the Greens. The Coalition remains divided on the issue of a CET, but Treasurer Scott Morrison has downplayed suggestions that the issue could prompt a leadership spill.

ASX ripe for activist investors: Credit Suisse

Original article by David Rogers
The Australian – Page: 27 : 15-Jun-17

Hasan Tevfik of Credit Suisse expects more activist investors to target Australian-listed stocks in the wake of Elliott Management’s push for a restructuring at BHP Billiton. He says activist investment is gaining momentum in Australia and it is inevitable that local superannuation funds will adopt this strategy given the returns achieved by activist hedge funds in North America. Caltex, AMP, News Corporation and Lendlease are among the companies that are seen as potential targets for activist investors.

Elliott push to overhaul BHP’s board

Original article by Paul Garvey
The Australian – Page: 20 : 15-Jun-17

BHP Billiton will shortly select a successor to chairman Jac Nasser, but Elliott Management says the resources group should use the leadership change to undertake sweeping changes to its board. The activist hedge fund argues that many directors have been the board for a long time and approved acquisitions and share buybacks that have contributed to BHP’s underperformance. There is support among BHP shareholders for Elliott’s proposal to divest its petroleum assets, although some of the hedge fund’s other proposals have gained little traction.

Iron ore fall continues but Deutsche says China steel demand will hold

Original article by Jessica Sier
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 29 : 15-Jun-17

The spot price of iron ore for delivery to the port of Qingdao in China has fallen below $US54 per tonne, its lowest level in 12 months. A number of factors have contributed to the recent downturn in the iron ore price, including a sharp fall in Chinese steel exports, a growing move toward protectionism by other steel-producing nations and China’s move to reduce steel capacity. However, Deutsche Bank expects demand for steel in China to remain relatively strong.
