Outlook ‘tough’ as economy slows

Data from Credit Suisse shows that financial markets expect the cash rate to remain on hold in the next 12 months, following the release of the latest GDP data. The economy expanded by just 0.3 per cent in the March 2017 quarter, and year-on-year growth fell to an eight-year low of 1.7 per cent. The data will cast doubt on the Reserve Bank’s forecast of calendar year economic growth of 2.5-3.5 per cent. The Commonwealth Bank notes that the central bank will be adverse to easing the cash rate, as doing so could further inflate house prices.

Independent senator Nick Xenophon says the Australian Press Council’s independence has been undermined by the appointment of GetUp chair Carla McGrath to its board. He says McGrath should resign, as she cannot be a board member of both the APC and the political activist group. The APC has responded to a boycott of its rulings by leading newspapers by issuing a statement in which it stresses that McGrath will not adjudicate any complaints against publishers in which there is the potential for a conflict of interests.

Minimum pay hike ‘risks benefits of penalty cuts’

The ACTU says the 3.3 per cent increase in the minimum wage is insufficient, although employers’ groups warn that it could lead to job losses and deter businesses from hiring additional staff. The Fair Work Commission’s ruling lifts the minimum wage by $A22.20 a week to $A694.90, with president Iain Ross arguing that it is unlikely to have much adverse impact on employment. He added that this would probably not have been the case if a larger increase in the minimum wage had been approved.

Reserve takes hands off the growth lever

The Reserve Bank of Australia’s monetary policy statement for June 2017 notes that GDP growth is likely to have slowed in the March 2017 quarter. Paul Dales of Capital Economics says that while the central bank may be willing to overlook a temporary fall in GDP, a second successive quarter of weak GDP growth in June would be a concern for it. Dales expects the RBA to leave official interest rates unchanged at 1.5 per cent for the rest of 2017, after doing so in June.

Clause gives ‘unfettered power’ to alter levy: ABA

Original article by Joanna Mather
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 9 : 7-Jun-17

Australian Bankers’ Association CEO Anna Bligh has expressed concern that a clause in the bank levy bill would empower the relevant government minister to change the methodology used to calculate the tax. She has also called for the bill to include a "sunset clause" for the levy. Bob Deutsch of the Tax Institute adds that the bill would enable the Government to adjust the levy via a legislative instrument to ensure that revenue meets its forecasts.

Foxtel has confirmed that its Foxtel Play subscription video on-demand service will be relaunched as Foxtel Now, as part of a major overhaul of the pay-TV group’s branding. Foxtel will also launch a "puck" streaming device in the second half of 2017, which may provide access to rival services such as Netflix and Stan. Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh says Foxtel Now is unlikely to gain customers at the expense of its traditional pay-TV service, as they target different segments of the market. Foxtel’s rebranding includes a new logo.
