Data from CoreLogic shows that residential property values across five Australian capital cities fell by 1.1 per cent in May 2017. Analysts and fund managers warn that listed real estate investment trusts could be vulnerable to a slowdown in the housing market. Stuart Cartledge of Phoenix Portfolios notes that developers that have pre-sold apartments will not be hit by any downturn, although future sales volumes may be affected.

The Gladstone LNG project reduced its average daily gas intake to 723 terajoules in May 2017, to the lowest level in a year, while the intake was 20 per cent lower than in March. However, GLNG operator Santos has declined to comment on whether the Federal Government’s proposal to impose LNG export controls contributed to the reduced gas intake. Meanwhile, Nik Burns of UBS says GLNG is unlikely to meet the most bullish forecasts for total exports of six million tonnes in 2017.

Executives from rival Australian media companies joined forces on 30 May to lobby federal politicians to support cross-media ownership reforms. The Australian Labor Party and the Greens were widely criticised for opposing reforms such as abolition of the "two out of three rule". Industry executives used the summit at Parliament House to stress that local content and jobs will be at risk if the existing regime is not changed to enable local media players to compete with digital giants such as Google and Facebook.

Both sides dig in for battle over top tax rate

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten will reiterate his party’s stance on increasing the Medicare levy in an address to the Committee for Economic Development of Australia summit. Labor wants the income threshold for the 0.5 per cent increase in the levy to be set at $A87,000, rather than being applied to all income-earners. Shorten will also defend Labor’s own increase in the levy in 2013, arguing that there was strong growth in wages at the time, while there had also been a recent increase in the tax-free threshold.

Domino’s Pizza Enterprises has advised that the scale of its internal investigation into wage fraud means a report on the probe will be released up to six months behind schedule. Meanwhile, the Fair Work Ombudsman has indicated that it is now carrying out 26 separate investigations into the underpayment of Domino’s employees. Original article by Ewin Hannan
The Australian – Page: 2 : 1-Jun-17

Research shows that just 36.4 per cent of Australian employees were covered by collective agreements in 2016, down from 43.4 per cent in 2010. The authors note that the proportion of workers covered by union agreements has declined since 2014, while coverage by non-union agreements has steadied after falling between 2010 and 2014. ACTU president Ged Kearney claims that on average, full-time workers who are covered by union agreements are paid an additional $A410 per week.

Australia ‘must deal with quite spectacular housing bubble’

Original article by David Rogers
The Australian – Page: 28 : 1-Jun-17

A sharp downturn in the residential property market and an economic slowdown in China are among the biggest risks to the Australian economy, according to Willem Buiter of Citigroup. The investment bank’s global chief economist warns that the Federal Government’s plans to invest $A75bn in infrastructure over 10 years will not be sufficient to offset the impact of a property market downturn. He says the Government must take action to ensure that the housing market has a soft landing.

Retail decline threat to growth

Original article by Eli Greenblat
The Australian – Page: 17 & 28 : 1-Jun-17

National Australia Bank forecasts that retail sales rose by 0.3 per cent during April 2017, although chief economist Alan Oster says this figure could be optimistic. Official data will be released on 1 June, but some observers believe that retail sales fell in April. Oster says the retail sector is already in recession, and he does not anticipate an improvement in the near-term. A survey on the spending behaviour of NAB customers has highlighted the difficult trading conditions for the retail sector.

Original article by Phillip Coorey, James Frost
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 1-Jun-17

Australia’s banks have conceded that the Federal Goverment’s proposed levy is likely to proceed, but they have expressed concern about the "aggressive" stance of Treasurer Scott Morrison regarding the sector. Financial System Inquiry chair David Murray has described the levy as a "hate tax" which raises the question of whether the Government will target other sectors. Australian Foundation Investment Company MD Ross Barker has also expressed concern about the Government’s stance on the banks, given their importance to the economy.
