Mixed views on dollar’s chance of hitting US80c

The Australian dollar rallied on 14 February 2017, benefiting from factors such as an upbeat business survey and a strong rise in the Chinese producer price index. The currency has reached a two-year high on a trade-weighted index basis, while it is within sight of the 2016 high of $US0.7835. However, the spot price of iron ore may not be sustainable at the current elevated level, while the gap between official interest rates in Australia and the US is likely to narrow as the Federal Reserve gears up to tighten monetary policy.

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 15-Feb-17

Roy Morgan’s Young Australians Survey has found that Australians aged 6-13 spent an average of almost 12 hours a week using the internet in 2016, almost double the six-and-a-bit hours a week kids spent online in 2008. Including all internet use at home, school or elsewhere, the time spent online has risen consistently over the period, increasing by an average 42 minutes each year. In contrast, the average Australian youngster spent 10.5 hours a week watching TV in 2016, down from over 14.5 hours a week in 2008. However, almost 30 per cent of kids’ internet usage is done outside the home. At home, kids spend almost eight and a half hours a week using the internet – still around two hours less than they spend watching TV.

Betting on US stimulus could come back to bite

Original article by David Rogers

Sharemarkets have rallied in response to indications from US President Donald Trump of a major announcement on tax policy in coming weeks. Diana Mousina of AMP Capital warns that any move by the Trump administration to back away from its proposed tax cuts for companies and individuals would hit shares and US economic growth. However, an overly aggressive fiscal stimulus package would risk a spike in the inflation rate, which would most likely prompt a rise in interest rates. This in turn could derail the sharemarket rally.

Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh says the pay-TV group is collaborating with Facebook on the development of software that can detect unauthorised live streams on the social media platform. The tool is being created in the wake of the boxing match between Anthony Mundine and Danny Green. Foxtel had broadcast the match on a pay-per-view basis, but it was illegally streamed via several Facebook accounts. Foxtel has agreed to accept a public apology from those responsible rather than pursue legal action.

The Federal Government’s cross-media ownership reforms will require the support of Senate crossbenchers. However, One Nation senator Pauline Hanson is said to be concerned about foreign ownership of Australian media assets, while Nick Xenophon advocates imposing a "super profits" tax on Google and Facebook due to their growing dominance of the online advertising market. Communications Minister Mitch Fifield is tipped to introduce the media reform bill in the upper house in mid-February 2017.

Apple Pay to take bite at big three banks

Original article by James Eyers
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 30 : 10-Feb-17

Macquarie Bank and ING Direct customers will have access to the Apple Pay service by the end of February 2017, but the ANZ Bank is the only "big four" bank that currently offers it. The head of Apple Pay, Jennifer Bailey, warns that the Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and National Australia Bank risk losing customers unless they embrace the global payments system. ANZ Bank has indicated that about 26 per cent of its customers use Apple Pay, while Bailey notes that Australians are now the biggest users of the service.

Over 12 million Australians have jobs for the first time – including over 8 million full-time jobs, but real unemployment now 9.7% (1.295m)

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 9-Feb-17

A Roy Morgan Research survey has found that Australia’s real unemployment rate was 9.7 per cent in January 2017. Some 1.295 million Australians are now unemployed (down 51,000 in a year), while the number of people who are under-employed has fallen by 122,000 in the last 12 months to 1,107,000 (8.3 per cent of the workforce). Meanwhile, the total workforce has risen to 13,414,000 (up 316,000 since January 2016), and total employment has risen above 12 million for the first time, to 12,120,000 (up 368,000). The number of Australians who are employed full-time has also risen above 8 million for the first time, to 8,085,000 (up 221,000 since January 2016). The official unemployment rate was 5.8 per cent in December 2016. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says US President Donald Trump has consistently outlined the problems with the way unemployment is measured in the US. Trump’s insistence that the BLS severely under-estimates US unemployment is one of the primary reasons he was elected President. The Australian Government faces the same problem Trump has called attention to. The changing nature of the workforce in Australia, the US, and for that matter around the world demands that Governments look seriously at amending the official measures of employment and unemployment that policymakers rely on to make decisions that impact millions of their citizens.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 8-Feb-17

A Roy Morgan Research Single Source survey has found that the satisfaction level of personal customers of Australia’s four major banks was 79.9% in the six months to December 2016, compared with 79.5% in November. However, the top-quintile customers (top 20%), who account for 62.9% of the total value of the financial services market across all banking and wealth-management products, had the lowest satisfaction level of all the quintiles (73.4%) and the lowest level of advocacy with a "net promoter score" (NPS3) of minus 23.9. The Commonwealth Bank had the highest satisfaction rating among top-quintile customers (75.6%), although the smaller Teachers Mutual Bank had the highest satisfaction rating among these customers, at 96.1%.
