House prices in Western Australia’s Pilbara region are unlikely to continue to decline. Hedland Property Shop MD Jim Henneberry says a recent increase in sales turnover suggests that the local real estate market is about to rebound, after several years of dramatic falls. The median house price in South Hedland fell 70 per cent in just four years, from $A850,000 to $A250,000.

The price of iron ore may be negatively affected by oversupply and lower demand. Having risen 81 per cent to around $US80 a tonne in 2016, it is unlikely to continue to climb in 2017. Rising iron ore prices have had a positive impact on share prices of Australian-listed mining companies, with Rio Tinto’s shares gaining 34 per cent in value in 2016.

Apartment buildings due for completion in 2017 and 2018 are often located in postcodes which are considered as risky by lenders. A study of Rider Levett Bucknall’s crane index in the September 2016 quarter indicates that about 38 per cent of cranes were located in such areas. Brisbane’s apartment scene is particularly problematic, with nearly 57 per cent of all cranes located in areas of restricted lending.

Big four looking good on capital

Original article by Tony Boyd

Australia’s major banks are unlikely to be affected by a dispute between the European banks and the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. Predictably, the European banks are resisting the committee’s stricter capital requirements. The committee stated on 4 January 2017 that aid the regulatory reforms would be delayed as more time is needed to finalise some of their aspects. Unlike the European banks, the big four Australian banks have sufficient levels of common equity tier 1 capital to meet the committee’s new requirements.
