Nathan Tinkler and members of his family paid about $A6.6m for a 37 per cent stake in Australian Pacific Coal in 2015. Tinkler has advised that his family intends to divest its entire holding, which is now worth some $A40m, due to APC’s long delay in finalising a deal to acquire the Dartbrook coal project in the Hunter Valley. Tinkler has also rejected speculation that APC could be a potential buyer of Anglo American’s Drayton South project if it gains environmental approval.

Alice DeBoos, a partner at law firm K&L Gates, warns that wages in the construction sector could increase due to the Federal Government’s proposed building code. She says enterprise bargaining agreements that have been made since April 2014 will need to be renegotiated in order to comply with the code, and unions will seek a trade-off in return for scrapping non-compliant clauses. Senator Nick Xenophon and the Australian Industry Group have also expressed concern about the retrospective nature of the code.

His comments have coincided with Facebook’s revelation of further flaws in its metrics which resulted in more of its audience data being incorrectly reported. Meanwhile, Think TV CEO Kim Portrate has stressed that Australian TV audience metrics have been independently audited for 16 years.

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation and 21st Century Fox will benefit from plans by president-elect Donald Trump to reduce the US corporate tax rate from 35 per cent to 15 per cent. Trump’s vow to block the proposed merger of telco AT&T and media giant Time Warner will also be welcomed by Murdoch, who made an aborted takeover bid for the latter in 2014. Likewise, Trump’s election win has ensured that he will not establish a TV network that would target a similar audience to Murdoch’s Fox News.

Malcolm Broomhead, Carolyn Hewson and Lindsay Maxsted are said to be the leading internal contenders to succeed BHP Billiton chairman Jac Nasser, who intends to step down by mid-2017. Meanwhile, CEO Andrew Mackenzie says demand for Australian iron ore and coal has been boosted by the Chinese Government’s efforts to make its steel mills and coal mines more efficient. However, he adds that BHP is taking the view that a likely increase in global supply means the current price of iron ore will not be sustained. In contrast, Deutsche Bank has lifted its forecast for the iron ore price by 21 per cent in 2017, to $US55 per tonne.
