Land tax plan to reboot market

New South Wales Finance Minister Dominic Perrottet has suggested that housing affordability could be improved if states replaced stamp duties with a land tax regime. He argues that phasing out stamp duty would encourage more people to sell their homes, particularly so-called empty nesters. It is estimated that stamp duty revenue in NSW will top $A8.7bn in 2016. However, the land tax proposal has been rejected by several other state treasurers. The issue of housing affordability is also on the Federal Government’s agenda.

Content the future for telcos: media bosses

Original article by Max Mason
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 11 & 14 : 25-Oct-16

Seven West Media CEO Tim Worner says A&T’s proposed acquisition of Time Warner has major implications for both telcos and media companies. He believes that more deals of this nature are possible, noting the growing importance of content to telcos. Southern Cross Media Group CEO Grant Blackley says such deals could occur in Australia, and points out that under current media ownership laws his company could be acquired by Telstra but it could not merge with Fairfax Media.

Majority of Australians support Muslim & Asylum seeker immigration; and 58% want Australia’s population kept under 35 million

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 25-Oct-16

A special Roy Morgan telephone survey conducted over the three nights of 18-20 October 2016 shows that 58 per cent of Australians support Muslim immigration, while 33 per cent oppose it. Gary Morgan’s comment on Australian views on Muslim Immigration

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 25-Oct-16

Today’s special Roy Morgan survey conducted over three nights last week shows a clear majority of Australians (58%) support Muslim immigration compared to only 33% that oppose. Importantly, majorities of supporters of Australia’s major political parties support Muslim immigration as well – 51% of L-NP supporters (cf. 36% oppose); 67% of ALP supporters (cf. 25% oppose); 88% of Greens supporters (cf. 5% oppose). Only supporters of a resurgent One Nation party are strongly opposed to Muslim immigration – 87% opposed cf. 4% support. Previous Roy Morgan surveys have consistently showed a majority of Australians support Muslim immigration: A year ago in October 2015 65% of Australians supported Muslim immigration cf. 28% opposed; and in July 2010 54% of Australians supported Muslim immigration cf. 35% opposed. However, across a number of questions relating to immigration, and the ideal size for Australia, there has been a shift away from supporting growth and immigration over the last year. This is not back to the levels recorded in 2010 but does give a clear sense that Australians are becoming less open to immigration.

Turnbull moves to shut court doors on anti-coal activists

Original article by Dennis Shanahan
The Australian – Page: 1 & 6 : 25-Oct-16

The Australian Government has flagged action to crack down on environmental activists’ use of the court system to block resources projects. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has raised the possibility of reviving legislation aimed at curbing vexatious litigation by environmental groups. The mooted crackdown follows warnings from India’s Power Minister Piyush Goyal that opposition to Adani’s Carmichael coal mine could affect his nation’s future investment in Australia. The campaign against Carmichael has received funding from at least one US organisation that has links to John Podesta, who is heading the presidential election campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Time Warner is Murdoch’s lost chance

Original article by Neil Chenoweth
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 10 : 25-Oct-16

Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox had the opportunity to acquire Time Warner in 2014 and create a media giant worth $US160bn. Time Warner rejected the $US80bn bid and sought a higher offer, but this would have required 21st Century Fox CEO Chase Carey to remain at the helm at a time when Murdoch was preparing his sons to succeed him. James and Lachlan Murdoch were subsequently appointed CEO and co-executive chairman respectively. The proposed $US85bn ($A112bn) acquisition of Time Warner by AT&T may prompt other mega mergers, but the Murdochs may not be able to pursue such deals without relinquishing control of their media empire.
