BBHO syndicate member Sterling Buntine fears that its $A386 million bid for S. Kidman & Company will not be treated fairly by the board. Buntine stressed that a rival bid from Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting and Shanghai CRED is inferior on two counts, namely being lower at $A365 million and requiring approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 300 Metals & Mining Index has gained 45.3 per cent so far in 2016, while the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 has risen by just 6.2 per cent. The rebound in the share prices of resources and energy stocks has rewarded investors who capitalised on a sell-off in the sector earlier in the year. WestOZ Funds Management has been progressively lifting its funds’ weightings toward the sector over recent months, while scaling back their exposure to cash.

The News Corp Australia flagship’s CEO Nicholas Gray says the newspaper will seek to lift this to 100,000 paid subscribers in 2017. Meanwhile, editor-in-chief Paul Whittaker says many news websites are now looking to adopt the paywall model. He adds that the company’s digital products complement its traditional print newspapers and allow it to produce editions that are tailored for specific digital devices.

Morrison targets cost of housing

Original article by Laura Tingle
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 24-Oct-16

Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison notes that the proportion of Australians who own their home has fallen from 71 per cent to 67 per cent over the last two decades. However, he will argue in a speech on 24 October 2016 that housing supply is the main factor that is affecting housing affordability. He will also say that a range of other factors rather than the impact of property investors is affecting housing affordability. Morrison will also flag a push for greater co-operation with state governments to make more land available for residential development.

India’s Power Minister Piyush Goyal has warned that the long-running opposition to Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland could affect his nation’s future investment in Australia. Goyal added that Indian could source coal from countries such as South Africa and Indonesia if investing in Australian projects becomes too difficult. Recent media reports revealed that a leading Australian anti-coal group, the Sunrise Project, has been funded by US-based foundations. Documents released by Wikileaks also show that at least one of these foundations has links to John Podesta, who is heading the presidential election campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Seven Group’s executive chairman Kerry Stokes has criticised the Australian Human Rights Commission’s investigation into a Bill Leak cartoon that was published in August 2016. He has described the investigation as the greatest threat to freedom of the press that he has seen in his long career in the media industry, and he says section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act stifles the media’s ability to fully informing the public about important issues. Stokes has also praised "The Australian" for publishing the controversial cartoon.
