Western Australian Nationals leader Brendon Grylls claims that parliament can alter the state agreements of Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton without their consent. The state agreements require BHP and Rio to pay a levy of $A0.25 for each ton of iron ore they produce, but Grylls has proposed lifting this to $A5. He also alleges that they have breached the state agreements. A Rio spokesman has warned that future investment in WA and iron ore supply would be jeopardised if the government sought to change the state agreements.

AFIC warns on bank dividends

Original article by Simon Evans
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 25 : 18-Oct-16

Australian Foundation Investment Company MD Ross Barker expects the S&P/ASX 200 to be trading at around its current level in 12 months’ time. However, he expects the 50 largest stocks to outperform small- and medium-capitalisation stocks over the next year. Barker does not anticipate any further easing of monetary policy and says there is potential for a rise in the cash rate before the end of 2017. He adds that the major banks may not be able to sustain their dividend payouts, while large miners could potentially increase their dividends in the next few years.

Data from Mergermarket shows that the value of mergers and acquisitions fell by 20 per cent globally in the first nine months of 2016, to $US2.2trn ($A2.9trn). M&A activity in Australia is rising as the end of the calendar year approaches. Anthony Aboud of Perpetual has identified a number of factors which may indicate that a company is making acquisitions for the wrong reasons. These include pursuing deals solely in the interests of diversification, paying too much for goodwill and making acquisitions that are motivated by financial incentives.

Whitehaven ramps up coking coal output

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 25 : 18-Oct-16

The rise in the price of coking coal has prompted Whitehaven Coal to lift production in the December 2016 quarter and scale back output of thermal coal. The proportion of semi-soft coking coal produced at its Maules Creek mine will rise to 30 per cent during the period. The price of this coal has risen more strongly than thermal coal in 2016, although growth in the price of premium hard coking coal has significantly outpaced both. Peter O’Connor of Shaw & Partners says other miners could move to lift production, which could in turn put pressure on the coking coal price.

Senate rides shotgun on IR bills

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 2 : 18-Oct-16

The Australian Government is hopeful that all but one senate crossbencher, Jacqui Lambie, will be open to supporting its bills to reinstate the Australian Building & Construction Commission and establish a Registered Organisations Commission. However, some crossbenchers have a list of policies they want implemented in return for their support. Amongst other things, Nick Xenophon will press for imported building materials to be subject to local building standards and increased protection for whistleblowers, while David Leyonhjelm wants importation of the seven-shot Adler shotgun to be legalised.
