Gold will shine: Evolution chair

The sharp fall in the gold price in early October 2016 has weighed on the shares of Australian gold producers. However, Evolution Mining executive chairman Jake Klein remains upbeat about the precious metal, arguing that historical analysis suggests that the bull market for gold stocks may not be over. Speculation about an interest rate rise in the US has contributed to the bearish sentiment toward gold, but Klein notes that a mooted rate rise in December would be only the second since 2007.

Bank culture won’t change overnight: PM

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 8 : 6-Oct-16

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says Australian banks require more accountability and transparency. He is confident that requiring the "big four" CEOs to front a parliamentary committee at least once a year will facilitate this, although he concedes that it will take some time for the culture within banks to change. The Federal Government also proposes to create a new tribunal for aggrieved customers to seek restitution, which was backed by Commonwealth Bank CEO Ian Narev and ANZ Bank CEO Shayne Elliott when they fronted the committee.

Sovereign debt could well be the driver of the next share selloff

Australia’s benchmark S&P ASX 200 is currently trading on a forward price-earnings ratio of around 16 times, compared with its long-term average of about 14.5 times. The index reached a 2016 high of 5,587 points at the start of August, and despite a number of pullbacks it is still three per cent higher than at the start of the year. However, the prospect of an eventual end to quantitative easing by central banks is likely to put upward pressure on government bond yields, which will in turn weigh on sentiment toward equities.

The Australian Communications & Media Authority has ruled that Macquarie Media must sell Sydney radio station 2CH. The 2015 merger of Macquarie Radio Network and Fairfax Media’s radio assets resulted in the merged group owning three radio stations in Sydney, in breach of the "’two to a market" media ownership rule. ACMA has refused to grant Macquarie a third temporary exemption and deemed that 2CH must be sold.

The head of BHP Billiton’s petroleum division, Steve Pastor, is upbeat about the group’s US shale operations. He is particularly bullish about the Permian shale field in West Texas, noting that it could potentially become the division’s biggest source of production and cash flow within five years. Meanwhile, Pastor says BHP will consider acquisitions that add value, but it will only pursue deals that are appropriately priced. He has also forecast a global oil shortage in 2017.
