Stock exchange operator ASX Limited has indicated that an "internal hardware failure" rather than a cyber attack was responsible for technical problems that curtailed sharemarket trading on 19 September 2016. The market opened later than usual and closed early, with just $A169m worth of shares in the top 200 stocks changing hands. The ASX has stressed that the problems were not related to the issues that disrupted trading for four hours in 2011.

Timing of bank inquiry will limit scrutiny: ALP

Original article by Primrose Riordan
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 7 : 19-Sep-16

The Opposition has questioned the timing of a scheduled appearance by the "big four" bank CEOs before a parliamentary committee. They will front the inquiry in early October 2016, which coincides with both school holidays and a non-sitting week for Parliament. The Australian Labor Party also notes that it also covers the so-called "blackout period" for some of the banks, which will restrict the amount of information the CEOs can publicly disclose prior to the release of their financial results.

Big gains from small Pilbara changes

The Gina Rinehart-backed Roy Hill iron ore project shipped its first iron ore from the Pilbara in late 2015. The use of technology is a key feature of the $A10bn project. Amongst other things, it uses drones to undertake surveying work, and it is trialling automated truck refuelling technology. BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto have deployed driverless trucks at their Pilbara mines, but Roy Hill Holdings Barry Fitzgerald says the company does not think the technology has a sufficient cost benefit.

Media changes conservative, says global boss

Original article by Max Mason

IPG Mediabrands’ global CEO Henry Tajer argues that the Federal Government’s proposed cross-media ownership reforms do not go far enough. He say the reforms should encourage consolidation in the sector, noting that Australia has too many media companies given the nation’s population. Tajer adds that the reforms should also take into account global companies that already have a presence in Australia – such as Facebook and Google – and ones that will enter the market in coming years.

The upcoming monetary policy meetings of the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan will be a focus for Australian investors in the week beginning 19 September 2016. Futures markets have priced in a 20 per cent chance that the Federal Reserve will increase the cash rate, and Paul Ashworth of Capital Economics says a rate rise in December is more likely. The minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia will also be released, and Philip Lowe will appear before Parliament for the first time in his new role of RBA governor.
