Australian real unemployment was virtually unchanged at 10.4 per cent (down 0.1 per cent) in August 2016, nearly double the current ABS figure for July (5.7 per cent). However, this is a substantial increase in unemployment over the past year, with 1.332 million Australians (up 159,000 since August 2015) now unemployed. The Australian workforce has increased to 12,855,000 (up 104,000 since August 2015) over the last year, although total employment actually decreased to 11,523,000 (down 55,000). Meanwhile, a total of 2.249 million Australians, or 17.5 per cent of the workforce (the lowest since October 2015), were either unemployed or under-employed in August. This is up 132,000 from August 2015 (an increase of 0.9 per cent).

Company tax cuts to be scaled back

Original article by David Crowe
The Australian – Page: 1 & 2 : 15-Sep-16

The Australian Government plans to introduce legislation in the lower house to implement its full 10-year plan to reduce the company tax rate for all businesses. However, it is preparing to prioritise tax cuts for small businesses when the legislation is debated in the Senate, due to expectations that the full policy will be rejected by the upper house. The Government plans to reduce the tax rate for businesses with annual turnover of up to $A10m to 27.5 per cent, although the Opposition favours a turnover threshold of just $A2m.

Gary Morgan’s comment on the Roy Morgan August real unemployment estimates

Original article by Gary Morgan, Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 15-Sep-16

In August Australia’s real unemployment was 10.4 per cent (1.332 million people looking for work, 159,000 more than a year ago) and under-employment was 7.1 per cent (917,000, down 27,000 in a year) – a total of 17.5 per cent (2.249 million) Australians looking for work or looking for more work. Part-time employment spiked in June and July leading into and encompassing the Federal Election period. This phenomenon is not surprising and is consistent with part-time employment increases measured by Roy Morgan before the 2010 and 2013 Federal Elections. Now that this period is past, part-time employment has fallen back as many of these employees are no longer employed while others are now employed full-time. Today’s Roy Morgan real unemployment figures show that much more must be done by the Turnbull Government to provide employment opportunities to Australians looking for work and looking for more work. For the last 51 months (more than four years) in excess of 1 million Australians have been unemployed, stretching back to May 2012, and clearly more than 2 million Australians have been either unemployed or under-employed in every month this year.

The Community & Public Sector Union has flagged industrial action by Department of Immigration & Border Force employees between 26 September and 2 October 2016. The escalating dispute over a new enterprise agreement is expected to result in strike action at Australia’s international airports and cruise ship terminals, as well as cargo ports. The industrial action will coincide with school holidays in some states, which has attracted criticism from Employment Minister Michaelia Cash.

Investors have been warned to expect further volatility in equity markets until the US Federal Reserve resumes increasing interest rates. Many global fund managers anticipate that the central bank will begin tightening monetary policy soon, although they generally expect rates to rise gradually. The recent equities sell-down has boosted government bond yields, and there is growing concern that the bond market’s long bull run may be nearing its end.

Tighter supply means iron ore won’t fall to $US30: investors

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 21 : 15-Sep-16

Colonial First State Global Asset Management’s Todd Warren notes that a number of factors have contributed to lower-than-expected iron ore supply in 2016. However, he says the most bearish forecasts for the iron ore price are unlikely to be realised. The price of the steel input has retreated in recent weeks, although it has remained above $US50 per tonne for most of the last six months. Citigroup forecasts that the iron ore price will average $US45/tonne in 2017.

The Australian – Page: 19 : 15-Sep-16

Australian-listed Seven West Media is said to pay at least $A50m a year for TV programs from the Walt Disney Company. The output deal will expire in late 2016 or early 2017, and Seven is said to be seeking to renegotiate the terms of the arrangement to allow the broadcaster to selectively take new programs. Seven is also investing heavily in local content. The Nine Network recently renegotiated its content deal with Warners Bros.
