The Financial Ombudsman Service’s chief ombudsman Shane Tregillis has spoken against a proposal to set up a new banking tribunal. He believes that such a tribunal would make the dispute resolution system more adversarial and legalistic. Tregillis has suggested that the proposal should be examined by the independent panel led by Ian Ramsay which will conduct a review of the financial services sector’s dispute resolution and complaints system.

Savvy mine buyers benefit from coal price lift

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 27 : 9-Sep-16

The price of coking coal has risen 47 per cent in the last month, and 105 per cent so far in 2016. Macquarie Group notes that only 510,000 tonnes of coking coal has been traded via the globalCOAL platform in the last month, and it says the low volumes have been a major driver of the spot price in recent weeks. The spot price is currently significantly higher than the contract price, which has benefited major spot price traders such as BHP Billiton.

Philip Lowe says that thorough supervision of banks is the best way to safeguard against a financial crisis, and he argues that regulatory reforms alone are insufficient. Lowe will shortly succeed Glenn Stevens as Reserve Bank of Australia governor. The banking sector has been subject to greater scrutiny by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority in recent years, while they are expected to face further regulatory requirements when the so-called Basel IV reforms are finalised by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

South32 chief docked $1.2m over mining deaths in Africa

Original article by Tess Ingram
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 28 : 9-Sep-16

The annual report of South32 shows that the Australian-listed group’s safety record in South Africa was reflected in the remuneration of senior executives in 2015-16. The miner’s board slashed the short-term incentive payments of CEO Graham Kerr and other top executives after four fatal incidents at its South African mines and aluminium smelter during the financial year. This is estimated to have reduced Kerr’s total remuneration by around $A1.2m.
