Demand rally seen as strong enough to withstand US rate rise

Cadence Capital’s Karl Siegling argues that a rise in US interest rates is likely to have only a short-term impact on the recent rebound in commodity prices. James Gerrish of Shaw & Partners notes that while the gold price is likely to be the most affected by a rate rise, the iron ore price is primarily influenced by supply and demand considerations. Siegling adds that base metal producers will be the hardest hit by a rise in US interest rates.

Woodside floats into the Scarborough LNG debate

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 11 : 6-Sep-16

Woodside Petroleum will make an upfront payment of $US250m for half of BHP Billiton’s stake in the Scarborough LNG project in Western Australia. The deal includes a provision for the payment of an additional $US150m if the partners in the project – which also include ExxonMobil – make a final investment decision. The Scarborough project is being developed on the basis that it will use floating LNG technology, although this seems less likely with Woodside on board, given that it has onshore gas processing facilities in the state.

The Age – Page: 6 : 6-Sep-16

A confidential report produced for Victoria’s Country Fire Authority outlined a range of strategies for reducing union influence on the volunteer-dominated firefighting service. Amongst other things, the report – which was prepared by law firm Seyfarth Shaw Australia – proposed to recruit CFA staff on non-union employment contacts and restrict unions’ access to CFA workplaces. The Victorian Government subsequently replaced the CFA board amid an ongoing dispute with the United Firefighters’ Union over an enterprise agreement.

The Productivity Commission will release a draft report on school students’ academic performance on 6 September 2016. The report concludes that students’ academic results have not improved despite a 24 per cent increase in federal and state funding for schools between 2004-05 and 2013-14. There was a 14 per cent increase in government funding per student over this period. Ken Boston, who helped develop the Gonski education reforms, has called for better allocation of government funding for schools.

Original article by Vanessa Desloires
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 26 : 6-Sep-16

Perpetual’s Matthew Sherwood says the Australian sharemarket could retreat in September 2016, noting that valuations and the outlook for earnings are high at present. The monetary policy meetings of central banks in the US, Japan and Europe will also be a focus for investors. Sharemarkets also often fall in September, as US traders return from the summer break. Michael Gable of Fairmont Equities says the S&P/ASX 200 could test the 5,200-point level in the near-term.

Australia’s Financial Ombudsman Service received 34,095 complaints from consumers in 2015-16, compared with 31,895 in 2014-15. There was a large rise in complaints about insurance products and services, which comprised 31 per cent of all complaints. The FOS resolved some 32,871 complaints during 2015-16, which is five per cent lower than previously, and this has been attributed to the rise in the number of grievances submitted to the agency.

Original article by Michael Bennet
The Australian – Page: 21 : 6-Sep-16

Data from Deutsche Bank shows that many Australian banks have reduced their term deposit interest rates by 15-25 basis points since the Reserve Bank cut the cash rate in August 2016. However, while rates on shorter-duration term deposits have fallen, the ANZ Bank has increased its rates on one- and two-year term deposits, while all four major banks have increased their longer-term rates for new customers. Meanwhile, the interest rates on their online savings accounts have been cut by 25 basis points.
