Fortescue Metals Group CEO Nev Power says proposed mergers between large state-owned Chinese steel-makers would benefit the global iron ore industry. He notes that it is in Fortescue’s interests for buyers of its iron ore to have increased profitability and efficiency. Power adds that Rio Tinto’s move to ramp up investment in its Silvergrass iron ore mine had been expected, as the resources giant needs the additional output to maintain production of its premium "Pilbara blend".

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 3-Aug-16

Roy Morgan Research has announced the June 2016 winners of its monthly Customer Satisfaction Awards in Australia. Emirates has won the award in the category of International Airlines, with a customer satisfaction rating of 89 per cent. Second-place getter Air New Zealand had a satisfaction rating of just over 87 per cent. Having won three months apiece so far this year, the two airlines have achieved the seeming impossible by holding Singapore Airlines – winner of the International Airline of the Year in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 – at bay. Currently, Singapore Airlines sits in third position, less than a percentage point behind Air New Zealand.

Real Aussie bachelorettes aren’t so into The Bachelor

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 3-Aug-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that almost half a million Australian women aged 14+ love watching
"The Bachelor Australia", including around 160,000 women aged 20 to 34 (six per cent). The survey, which was carried out in the year to March 2016, also shows that 57 per cent of the show’s target demographic of women aged 20-34 are partnered. Of these, eight per cent say The Bachelor Australia is a show they "really love to watch" – with wives the most likely of all (nine per cent), followed by imminent brides (seven per cent) and those in de facto relationships (six per cent). Meanwhile, just four of single women aged 20-34 really love the show.

ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence picks up steam ahead of the RBA meeting – up 2.5pts to 118.0

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 3-Aug-16

ANZ-Roy Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence has risen by 2.2 per cent to 118.0 in the week ending 31 July 2016, with the improvement in confidence being broadly based. Increasing speculation of a rate cut at this week’s RBA meeting was likely a key driver of confidence. In addition, the buoyancy of the equity market – with the Australian share market recording its best July in six years – was also key in supporting household sentiment. Consumers’ views of their current finances rose by 6.8 per cent, and households’ views of the economic outlook in the next 12 months rose by 3.7 per cent.

Gary Morgan on Consumer Confidence and the RBA’s decision to drop Australian interest rates to 1.5%

Original article by Gary Morgan, Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 3-Aug-16

The August interest rate cut by the RBA shows that finally the RBA has acknowledged Australia’s massive under-employment problem that has been persistently ignored (8.3% – 1.079 million, in June, according to the latest Roy Morgan employment estimates). In addition, it’s time policymakers recognised the true extent of unemployment in Australia (9.6% in June – 1.247 million – according to the latest Roy Morgan real unemployment estimate). To provide an effective stimulus to the economy the RBA should immediately cut Australian interest rates to 0.5% – the same as in the comparable economies of the US & UK and as we have been calling for the RBA to do for more than two years. Reducing interest rates will have the most positive impact on the Australian economy when the banks start lending to more businesses rather than just households – particularly as this week’s ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence shows Australians are growing increasingly confident – now at 118.0 (up 2.5pts this week). By providing increased finance and credit to businesses the Australian economy will grow strongly and more jobs will be created for the over 2 million Australians either unemployed or under-employed

Delegates at the annual Diggers & Dealers conference have been told that there has been a sharp increase in exploration activity following several lean years for the Australian mining industry. There has been particular emphasis on brownfields exploration, including older gold projects that were previously thought to have been exhausted. Independence Group MD Peter Bradford has urged investment in technology to access deeper deposits that are difficult to reach with the equipment that is currently available.

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 3 : 3-Aug-16

The market power of bank-owned retail superannuation funds will be scrutinised by the Productivity Commission as part of its review of vertical integration in the banking sector. The Commission has released a draft report on the first stage of its review, and a consultation process on the draft report remain open until 9 September 2016. Productivity Commission deputy chair Karen Chester says a key issue is whether super fund members are benefiting from the economies of scale generated by vertical integration.

Financial markets believe there is a 52 per cent chance that the Reserve Bank will reduce official interest rates to 1.25 per cent by November 2016, after the cash rate was cut by 25 basis points to 1.5 per cent on 2 August. The central bank has now reduced the cash rate by 3.25 per cent during the current monetary policy easing cycle, which began in late 2011. The RBA has warned that inflation is likely to remain low for some time, and noted that a housing price bubble now appears to be unlikely.

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 18 : 3-Aug-16

The dividend payouts of BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto will be closely scrutinised in the August 2016 reporting season, after their progressive dividend policies were scrapped earlier in the year. BHP has committed to paying shareholders a minimum of 50 per cent of its underlying attributable profit as dividends, while Rio Tinto’s new dividend policy will take into account its financial results and future earnings outlook. Meanwhile, analysts polled by Bloomberg generally expect Rio Tinto to post a 2016 interim underlying net profit after tax of $US1.56bn.

Shut weekday print, investor tells Fairfax

Original article by Damon Kitney, Jake Mitchell
The Australian – Page: 21 : 3-Aug-16

Australian businessman Alex Waislitz owns more than two per cent of Fairfax Media’s shares, via Thorney Investment Group and the listed Thorney Opportunities. He says that scrapping the weekday print editions of "The Age" and "The Sydney Morning Herald" is in the best interests of Fairfax and its shareholders, and CEO Greg Hywood should accelerate plans to do so. Waislitz has also welcomed Fairfax’s move to release separate earnings data for its Domain property listings business, and he says Fairfax should undertake a share buyback.
