Australian-listed Newcrest Mining produced 598,037 ounces of gold during the June 2016 quarter, compared with 636,521 ounces in the March quarter. Full-year output was at the lower end of its guidance of between 2.4 million and 2.6 million ounces. The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 18 : 25-Jul-16

BHP Billiton has declined to comment on speculation that it is poised to acquire Anglo American’s coal assets in Queensland, with the auction process nearing its end. BHP is said to be the only remaining bidder for the assets, which initially attracted interest from companies such as Glencore and Yancoal. The Anglo American assets include the Moranbah North and Grosvenor metallurgical coal mines, and some market analysts say the deal should generate significant synergies for BHP.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 25-Jul-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 49 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who own a mobile phone agree with the statement "I know how to find the best deal". This rate is almost the same among pre- and post-paid users. However, consumers who agree that they know how to find the best deal spend an average of seven per cent more for their post-paid and 25 per cent more for their pre-paid service per month than mobile owners who do not think they have value-seeking skills. Meanwhile, 66 per cent of mobile owners with Virgin (either pre- or post-paid) deem themselves good deal-hunters, ahead of 63 per cent of those with Amaysim and 57 per cent of those with Vodafone.

A new study by PwC shows that Australia is ranked 16th among OECD nations in terms of retaining older employees in the workforce. The PwC Golden Age Index estimates that the nation’s GDP could be boosted by 4.7 per cent by ensuring that more older people – particularly the 55+ age group – remain in the workforce. This would equate to an annual increase in GDP of about $A78bn. Jeremy Thorpe of PwC warns that it would take about 10 years to achieve such an increase in GDP via measures aimed at lifting workforce participation among older age groups.

The Group of 20 finance ministers have reiterated their commitment to a global economic growth target. This is despite new projections showing that the two per cent growth target for 2018 set at the G20 summit in Brisbane in 2014 is unlikely to be achieved. Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison and his predecessor Joe Hockey say this growth target is still relevant. Adam Triggs of the Australian National University says the latest forecasts from the International Monetary Fund suggest that the global economy will be worth $US117.7trn by 2018, rather than the target of $US123.9trn set in 2014.
