The Australian Government will allow exemptions to its proposed $A500,000 lifetime cap on non-concessional superannuation contributions, to take into account "life events" such as a divorce settlement or an inheritance. The cap had been expected to generate Budget savings of about $A550m over four years, but some estimates have suggested that the exemptions could potentially cost between $A300m and $A450m. Meanwhile, shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has stressed that any super reforms must not be retrospective. The Government plans to backdate the lifetime cap to 2007.

Original article by Joe Kelly
The Australian – Page: 4 : 21-Jul-16

The Australian Government continues to be criticised over its failure to respond to the Productivity Commission’s review of industrial relations laws. The Opposition argues that the Coalition does not have a mandate to pursue workplace reforms during its second term in office as it did not respond to the report prior to the 2016 election. The report, which was released in late 2015, makes 70 recommendations on changes to workplace laws. Business groups have urged the Coalition to pursue IR reforms.

Northern Star Resources’ gold production totalled 558,143 ounces in 2015-16, with sales of 561,153 ounces. MD Bill Beament remains bullish about the outlook for gold, forecasting that the recent rally in the price of the precious metal will be sustained. He notes that the UK’s vote to leave the European Union has had little impact on the gold price. He expects the gold price to rise further if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election, although he did not specifically name the Republican candidate.

Shares in Domino’s Pizza Enterprises closed 2.2 per cent higher at a new high of $A73.35 on 20 July 2016, in the wake of a rival’s collapse. Thomas Kierath of Morgan Stanley says the group could increase its market share following the demise of Eagle Boys Pizza, while Michael Simotas of Deutsche Bank notes that Domino’s could be blocked from acquiring Pizza Boys franchises on competition grounds. Morgan Stanley has an "overweight" recommendation on Domino’s shares, while Deutsche has a "hold" rating.

The Productivity Commission has recommended a number of changes to Australia’s agricultural policy. The commission states in a draft report that protectionist measures should be removed. It says the aim of liberalisation of the agricultural market necessitates the abolition of marketing agencies such as the New South Wales Rice Marketing Board and the Western Australian Potato Marketing Corporation. The Commission also says foreign investment in Australia’s agricultural sector should be encouraged rather than discouraged.

Growth returns to BHP but not in petroleum

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 17 & 22 : 21-Jul-16

BHP Billiton plans to lift iron ore, copper, coking coal and nickel production in 2016-17, after the coking coal division was the only one that increased production in 2015-16. However, the petroleum division is expected to reduce production by 13-17 per cent, after output was cut by six per cent in 2015-16. Meanwhile, iron ore shipments from BHP’s mines in Western Australia totalled 257 million tonnes in 2015-16, compared with the group’s target of 260 million tonnes. Output is slated to be within the range of 265 million to 275 million tonnes in 2016-17.
