CYBG and Henderson Group are among the Australian-listed stocks that have been heavily sold down in the wake of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union. Some local fund managers have capitalised on the bearish sentiment to increase their holdings of unloved stocks that have exposure to the UK. However, Bennelong Australian Equity Partners’ Julian Beaumont remains cautious about such stocks, while some fund managers are increasing their holdings of gold stocks or real estate investment trusts.

Runaway success: Australia’s jogging boom

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 7-Jul-16

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 23.2 per cent of Australians aged 14+ went jogging on a regular or occasional basis in the year to March 2016, compared with 14 per cent in the year to March 2006. Jogging was the fastest-growing sport/exercise in Australia over the last 10 years, ahead of hiking/bushwalking, cycling and yoga. Men’s overall participation has increased from 16.4 per cent to 24.2 per cent, while the proportion of women joggers has almost doubled from 11.6 per cent to 22.2 per cent. The survey also shows that while jogging participation peaks among the 14-24 year-old age bracket, older age brackets have shown the biggest change – particularly among women.

The yield on Australia’s 10-year government bond fell to a record low of 1.84 per cent on 6 July 2016. Bearish sentiment toward equities also prompted the yield on US Treasuries to fall to 1.34 per cent. The global shift to "safe haven" assets also prompted a rally in the gold price, which reached its highest level in two years. Meanwhile, the fallout from the UK’s vote to leave the European Union is continuing, with several British property funds moving to freeze redemptions.

United Voice penalty rates push key to marginal swing

Original article by Sarah Martin
The Australian – Page: 8 : 7-Jul-16

David McElrea, the assistant secretary of United Voice, says the union movement’s campaign on the issue of penalty rates in 10 marginal was a significant contributor to the large swing to the Australian Labor Party in the federal election. The union-backed campaign included text messages, robocalling and digital advertising, and played on fears that the Coalition would reduce weekend penalty rates in the retail and hospitality sectors if it is re-elected.

Negative gearing back on table

Original article by Samantha Hutchinson
The Australian – Page: 6 : 7-Jul-16

Property industry experts are concerned that the Coalition may change its stance on the negative gearing regime in the wake of the federal election. There are indications that some crossbenchers may support the Australian Labor Party’s proposed negative gearing reforms, which could in turn force the Coalition to reconsider its commitment to the existing regime. However, at least two independents – Bob Katter and Cathy McGowan – support the existing rules on negative gearing.

Troubled Guvera’s London IPO plan

Original article by Misa Han
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 8 : 7-Jul-16

Documents filed in court show that Australian streaming music provider Guvera originally intended to list on the London Stock Exchange rather than the local bourse. Guvera abandoned plans for a London listing following the collapse of its UK subsidiary Blinkbox, which boasted about 2.5 million subscribers when it was bought in early 2015. Guvera had acquired Blinkbox in order to facilitate its British IPO. Guvera’s Australian IPO was subsequently rejected, prompting two subsidiaries to be placed in administration.

PM finally set to scrape home

Seven undecided seats are likely to determine the outcome of the 2016 federal election. The Coalition appears to have won 72 seats to date, and Treasurer Scott Morrison is "very confident" that it will secure the 76 lower house seats required to form a majority government. However, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will hold meetings with several crossbenchers as a contingency plan in the event that the Coalition falls short of this target. Counting of votes is continuing, but the Australian Labor Party currently has 50.2 per cent of the popular vote on a two-party preferred basis.
