Federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten continues to favour a parliamentary vote on the issue of same-sex marriage. He has committed to introducing legislation within his first 100 days in office if the Australian Labor Party wins the 2016 election. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in turn aims to hold a plebiscite on the issue by the end of the year if the Coalition is returned to office. A recent survey by Griffith University showed that 70 per cent of respondents support a plebiscite.

Mark Britt, the CEO of iFlix, says the Asia-focused subscription video-on-demand group aims to expand into emerging markets such as Africa and the Middle East. Britt believes that there is the scope for a company worth billions of dollars to be established in such markets over the next decade or so, as the shift from traditional broadcast TV gathers pace. He notes that customising iFlix’s product offerings to suit each market has given it an advantage over Netflix, as has its willingness to adjust its content mix to comply with local cultural standards.

Melbourne’s Batman set to turn Green at Federal Election

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 20-Jun-16

Roy Morgan’s 2016 seat-by-seat analysis of the Greens’ 20 best performing electorates at the 2013 Federal Election shows that the Greens will win the Inner Melbourne electorate of Batman from the incumbent David Feeney (Australian Labor Party) and the Greens’ one sitting Member, Adam Bandt, will retain his seat of Melbourne. Roy Morgan interviewed 6,283 Australian electors aged 18+ across the 20 electorates between January and 11-12 June 2016. Of the doubtful Labor seats it appears the Victorian seat of Wills has been saved following Labor’s preference swapping deal with the Liberal Party. In a seat being targeted by the Greens – the electorate of Grayndler in Sydney held by Labor’s Anthony Albanese – voting is similar to the 2013 election. His primary vote was in the high 40s in 2013 and the Greens were outpolled by the Liberals. Albanese is likely to retain his seat. In Melbourne Ports in 2013, Labor’s Michael Danby was outvoted by the Liberals but retained the seat because of Greens preferences. A switch in primary votes between Labor and the Greens could see the seat fall to the Greens, although Labor (33 per cent) retains a significant primary vote lead over the Greens (26 per cent) in Melbourne Ports.

The Tasmanian Digital Television joint venture between WIN Corporation and Southern Cross Media Group. TDT will broadcast the Ten Network’s programs until mid-2016, when the affiliation agreement between Ten and Southern Cross ends. Southern Cross’s switch to Nine Entertainment Company’s content in key regional markets in some mainland states means the future of Nine’s content in Tasmania is uncertain. WIN is believed to be reluctant to pay to broadcast Nine’s content in Tasmania as TDT is not profitable.

The UK’s referendum on membership of the European Union is expected to be a key focus for Australian investors in the week beginning 20 June 2016. However, Alex Holmes of Capital Economics says the global economy is unlikely to be significantly affected in the long-term if the UK votes to leave the EU. Investors will also be awaiting the release of the minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s latest board meeting, as well as US economic data such as unemployment claims and oil inventories.
