The ASX argues that proposed changes to listing rules are intended to enhance the Australian bourse’s reputation as a market of "quality and integrity". However, the Australian Shareholders’ Association is concerned that the changes outlined in a recent consultation paper will make it harder for retail investors to participate in IPOs. The ASX proposes to introduce a minimum free-float of 20 per cent and scale back the minimum number of shareholders a company must have at the time of its IPO.

2GB presenter Ross Greenwood spoke to Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan about the latest Morgan Poll on 30 May 2016. The poll shows that the federal election is too close to call, with the Australian Labor Party leading the Coalition 51 per cent to 49 per cent on a two-party preferred basis. The Morgan Poll also shows that the Nick Xenophon Team, which is led by independent senator Nick Xenophon, is polling better than the Australian Labor Party in South Australia. Gary Morgan also stressed the need for changes to the Fair Work regime in order to create jobs, and noted that the economy is the key issue in the 2016 election campaign.

Tasman Market Fresh Meats is among the independent food retailers that have benefited from having stores located near an Aldi outlet, as consumers often do top-up shops after doing their main grocery shop at Aldi.

Economists say growth stunner won’t stop RBA rate cut

Deutsche Bank’s Adam Boyton says inflation will be a bigger influence on the Reserve Bank of Australia’s monetary policy deliberations than GDP data. New figures show that the economy expanded by a higher-than-expected 1.1 per cent in the March 2016 quarter, with year-on-year growth of 3.1 per cent. There is general consensus among economists that there will be at least one more interest rate cut in 2016, although Craig James of CommSec cautions that this could put more upward pressure on house prices.

Richard Coppleson of Bell Potter has forecast that the Australian Government will be returned to office on 2 July 2016 with a reduced majority of eight seats. He notes in the latest edition of the "Coppo Report" that a federal government has been ousted after one term just once in almost eight decades. Coppleson also notes that since 1949 there has always been a swing against the incumbent government at the first election after it took office.

New figures show that some construction workers in Australia’s eastern states are earning significantly more than the industrial award rate under enterprise bargaining agreements. Carpenters covered by union agreements in Queensland earn $A160,702 a year, while the award wage is just $A87,064. Likewise, building site labourers in Victoria are paid $A152,002 a year under an EBA. Master Builders Australia CEO Wilhelm Harnisch says construction workers’ EBA wages fail the "pub test".

Rio Tinto will spend an additional $US20m ($A27.5m) on its Jadar lithium-borate project in Serbia. The Jadar discovery is the only site in the world that features both lithium and borate, which has led to the official recognition of a new mineral called jadarite. Rio Tinto estimates that the Jadar project could eventually account for more than 10 per cent of the global supply of lithium, which is in high demand for use in electric vehicles.
