Corrs Chambers Westgarth CEO John Denton and Norton Rose Fulbright managing partner Wayne Spanner are among the lawyers who believe that Australia’s cross-media ownership laws are outdated. The Federal Government’s proposed reforms include abolishing the "reach rule" and the "two-out-of three rule", but Denton says the anti-siphoning list for sports broadcasts should also be included in the reform process.

James McIntyre of Macquarie Group says the Reserve Bank will have further ease monetary policy unless the Australian Government stimulates the economy with fiscal policy measures. He says this is unlikely, which will leave it to the central bank to put downward pressure on the dollar via rate cuts. McIntyre expects the cash rate to fall to at least one per cent.

Fast-food group McDonald’s is the latest Australian company to be embroiled in a wages scandal. An investigation has revealed that many McDonald’s staff are on wages that are below the award rate when penalty rates are taken into account, due to an enterprise agreement that the Shop, Distributive & Allied Employees’ Association negotiated in 2013. Penalty rates for working on weekends are excluded from the agreement.

Fortescue backs offshore competition on gas reservation

Fortescue Metals Group believes that changes to Australia’s lease retention system for oil and gas fields should be a higher priority than the Australian Labor Party’s proposed national interest test for LNG export projects. Fortescue, as a major user of gas, argues that scrapping the so-called "use it or lose it" system would be more effective in increasing the supply of gas for domestic customers. The lease retention system has come under scrutiny in the wake of Woodside Petroleum’s decision to put the Browse LNG project on hold.

The Australian Greens have proposed legislation to protect penalty rates if they are cut by the FWC, although this is opposed by both the Federal Opposition and the ACTU.
