Revenue forecasts in the Australian Government’s May 2016 Budget are based on expectations that the iron ore price will average $US55 over the next two years. The price of the steel input is currently trading at around this level, but futures market quotes in Singapore suggest that it could fall to about $US50. Meanwhile, Justin Smirk of Westpac warns that the iron ore price could potentially fall below $US40, before stabilising at about $US42.

Original article by Roy Morgan Research
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 10-May-16

The ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence rating for Australia remained unchanged at 113.9 in the week ended 8 May 2016. While the Reserve Bank’s cut to the official cash rate is likely to have been well received, any positive impact looks to have been somewhat offset by consumers’ reaction to the Commonwealth Budget. Consumers’ views towards their current personal finances fell 0.8 per cent, and consumers’ views toward the economic conditions in the next 12 months fell 1.2 per cent.

The Supreme Court of Victoria has ruled that there are no grounds for either Roy Morgan Research or Impact Investment Group to terminate the former’s lease at 401 Collins Street, Melbourne. Justice Clyde found that neither party had breached the terms of the 10-year lease and are therefore not entitled to damages. The dispute centred on the replacement of the building’s elevators. Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan had withheld rent payments due to the dispute, which culminated in IIG locking the market research firm out of its premises.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has told the National Press Club that the Australian Labor Party will act quickly to release a mini-Budget if it wins the federal election on 2 July 2016. He also indicated that Labor will reinstate plans to lift the employer superannuation contribution to 12 per cent. The Australian Government put this policy on hold after abolishing the mining tax. The super guarantee has been increased from nine per cent to 9.5 per cent, but at present it is not slated to rise to 12 per cent until 2025.

A new report shows that the print and digital advertising revenue of Australia’s major news publishers fell by a lower-than-expected 6.7 per cent in 2015, to $A2.4bn. The News Media Index report outlines the advertising revenue of News Corp Australia, Fairfax Media, West Australian Newspapers and APN News & Media, which account for around 90 per cent of the sector. Traditional media groups have been able to offset a decline in ad revenue with growth in digital subscriptions.

Fairfax Media CEO Greg Hywood has stressed that the group is still primarily a media company rather than a digital real estate business. He is also confident that Fairfax’s news operations would be able to survive without the revenue contribution of the Domain property division. Fairfax’s revenue from its publishing operations has fallen by six per cent so far in the second half of 2015-16, while Domain’s revenue has grown by nine per cent.

Business lashes PM on super, tax

Original article by Patrick Durkin, Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 5 : 11-May-16

Asciano chairman Malcolm Broomhead has questioned whether the Australian Government will act on its May 2016 Budget commitment to progressively reduce the company tax rate to 25 per cent. He says the Government has already broken its promise to make no changes to the superannuation regime, and criticised the retrospective nature of the super tax reforms. Treasurer Scott Morrison and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop have emphasised that the tax changes will only apply to future rather than past super earnings.
