New data from Roy Morgan Research shows that employees who rate their job security as "very poor" are over 50 per cent more likely than those with a "very good" sense of job security to suffer anxiety, stress or depression. A study from 2013 to 2015 of over 20,000 Australians aged 14+ about their employment found that 33 per cent report suffering anxiety, stress, and/or depression within the past 12 months. Some 30 per cent of employees with "very good" or "good" job security suffered from one or more of these conditions, compared with 35 per cent of those who rated security as "fair", 41 per cent of those who rated it as "poor" and 46 per cent of employees with "very poor" job security.

The Coalition won the 2013 federal election by 53.5 per cent to the Australian Labor Party’s 46.5 per cent on a two-party preferred basis, and public opinion polls suggest that the 56-day double-dissolution election on 2 July 2016 will be very close. The Opposition will require a swing of more than four per cent to win the election and oust a federal government after just one term for the first time since 1931.

Morgan Poll Update – Page: Online : 6-May-16

A special telephone Morgan Poll, which was carried out on 4-5 May 2016, has found that 41 per cent of Australian electors prefer Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull as Liberal Party Leader, while 24 per cent prefer Deputy Leader Julie Bishop and seven per cent prefer former Prime Minister Tony Abbott. Meanwhile, 22 per cent of electors prefer Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek as Australian Labor Party Leader, ahead of Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese (20 per cent) and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten (14 per cent). Roy Morgan Research executive chairman Gary Morgan says Labor’s best chance of a surprise victory in the upcoming Federal Election may be a last-minute leadership switch to Plibersek, as Labor did in 1983 when Bob Hawke replaced Bill Hayden as party Leader on the day Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser called an early Federal Election. Voting Intention telephone Morgan Poll conducted after Budget released Friday 6, 2016 – LNP 51% ALP 49%.

Foxtel chief waves off Ten takeover talk

Original article by Dominic White
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 29 : 9-May-16

Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh has downplayed speculation that the pay-TV group could seek to acquire free-to-air broadcaster Ten Network if cross-media ownership rules are relaxed. He argues that the competition regulator could be expected to closely scrutinise such a deal, and notes that a merger with Ten would make it more difficult for Foxtel to enter commercial arrangements with other free-to-air networks. Foxtel bought a 13.8 per cent stake in Ten in 2015.

Coal sector failing to overturn China’s import testing

Original article by Amanda Saunders
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 20 : 9-May-16

Greg Evans of the Minerals Council of Australia says China should either abandon its policy of testing the quality of imported coal or allow shipments to be tested before they depart for China. He adds that the quality control tests contributed to a decline in Australia’s coal exports to China to just 71.2 million tonnes in 2015, compared with 93.4 million tonnes in 2014. The Australian Government has also lobbied China to drop the policy, which was introduced in early 2015.

Business leaders say workplace reform, corporate taxes and economic stimulus are among the issues that need to be addressed during the 56-day federal election campaign. Andrew Harding, the head of Rio Tinto’s iron ore division, has stressed the need for policies that will promote economic growth, a view shared by Virgin Australia Holdings CEO John Borghetti. Business Council of Australia CEO Jennifer Westacott also argues that measures to boost economic growth should be a priority, while the Australian Industry Group has emphasised the need for tax reform.
