Voters are confused about the Federal Government’s plans to reinstate the Australian Building & Construction Commission. The Australian Labor Party opposes the creation of the ABCC, whose role would be limited to monitoring one industry sector. Yet when Labor was in power, former prime minister Julia Gillard argued at the ACTU Congress in Brisbane in 2009 that such a body was necessary. Her government subsequently established the Fair Work Building & Construction inspectorate.

Powered by Roy Morgan Research’s Single Source survey of over 50,000 Australians a year, the new Medibank Better Health Index is Australia’s most up-to-date and comprehensive quarterly health monitor. Based on interviews with approximately 1,000 Australians each week since 2007, the Index offers an in-depth look into the state of the nation’s health and how it is changing. The Medibank Better Health Index is centred on seven health indicators: Nutrition, Fitness, Body Mass, Medical Health, Mental Health, Smoking and Alcohol. Combined, these make up an overall Health Index Score, which tracks how Australia’s health is faring over time. The Health Index Score started from a base of 100 in 2007, and has since increased to 102.12. This higher score represents an overall improvement in the nation’s Health, taking into account better scores in our Fitness, Nutrition, Medical Health, Smoking and Alcohol, but some declines in BMI and Mental Health over the period.

Expectations of a looming global undersupply of copper has prompted renewed interest in the red metal among the world’s biggest mining companies. Jean-Sebastien Jacques, the head of Rio Tinto’s copper division and the group’s incoming CEO, forecasts that global copper supply will go into deficit in 2018-19. He says Rio would consider buying any so-called tier one copper assets that are put on the market, but notes that even tier two and tier three copper assets are expensive now.
