A Roy Morgan Single Source survey has found that 1.54 million Australians aged 14+ (8 per cent) already own a personal fitness band or fitness tracker, and another 785,000 (four per cent) intend to buy themselves one in the next 12 months (plus another 50,000 or so buyers who already have one). If all these intenders do go out and get one, there’ll be around 2.3 million Australians (12 per cent) sporting fitness bands by the end 2016. Australians who regularly or occasionally participate in sports or physical activities are more likely overall to already own (nine per cent) or intend to buy (five per cent) a fitness band or tracker.

Tourism and International Education Minister Richard Colbeck says the Australian Government may reconsider elements of its proposed tax on people who hold working holiday visas. The so-called ‘backpacker tax’ is slated to take effect on 1 July 2016, and will abolish the tax-free threshold for temporary workers. Colbeck has conceded that changes may be necessary to avoid a shortage of staff in sectors such as tourism and hospitality.

A decision on whether the sale of the S Kidman & Company rural property business to foreign buyers can proceed is likely in early April 2016. Three overseas consortiums were shortlisted to buy the Kidman assets, but it has been revealed that a number of potential Australian buyers have since been permitted to undertake due diligence. There have been suggestions that the decision was politically motivated, due to concerns about the sale of large landholdings to foreign interests.

Federal Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has refuted suggestions that cross-media ownership reforms will benefit some media groups in particular. Addressing the National Press Club in Canberra, he said the majority of media companies favour abolishing the "reach rule" and the "two-out-of-three rule". He also dismissed the concerns of some senators that the reforms would allow Rupert Murdoch to increase his control of the media sector.
