The ABC’s outgoing MD Mark Scott has questioned whether profit-driven Australian media companies will continue to produce local content. Speaking at the ABC’s annual parliamentary showcase in Canberra, he argued that the public broadcaster is best-placed to deliver such content, and urged all political parties to support it. Scott also noted that low-cost international content presents a threat to local content.

Aldi will open its first supermarkets in South Australia on 3 February 2016, with plans to open 16 by the end of the year. There is much stronger competition in South Australia’s grocery sector than in the eastern states, with only a few percentage points separating the market share of Coles, Woolworths and Foodland. Aldi’s state MD Viktor Jakupec says market research has found that South Australian shoppers are seeking the same value proposition as Aldi customers in the eastern states.

Lawyers representing the administrators of Queensland Nickel may order legal action against China-based CITIC to be discontinued, due to concerns about the likely cost of further litigation. The Clive Palmer-backed company launched a $A137.5m civil damages claim against CITIC in 2015, although most of the legal action by Palmer against the Chinese group is being undertaken via Mineralogy. Queensland Nickel’s administrators may also seek to settle litigation over an alleged breach of environmental laws in order to avoid further legal costs.

Shares in National Australia Bank spin-off Clydesdale Bank were slated to list on the London Stock Exchange on 2 February 2016. However, NAB has postponed the float by 24 hours after an unnamed ratings agency sought information on Clydesdale’s deposit rating. The request could potentially result in Clydesdale’s credit rating being downgraded, although NAB has stressed that this would have no impact on the UK bank’s financial outlook or its cost of funding.

Shares in BHP Billiton closed 2.2 per cent lower at $A14.92 on 2 February 2016, after Standard & Poor’s reduced its credit rating from "A+" to "A". The ratings agency warned of the potential for a further downgrade if BHP retains its progressive dividend policy amid a downturn in commodity prices. Aberdeen Asset Management’s John Manning expects BHP to adopt a dividend payout ratio, while some observers forecast that its 2015-16 interim dividend will be reduced by 50 per cent to $US0.31 per share.
