Seven West Media CEO James Warburton says the impending demise of the Holden brand will have a big impact on the advertising market, adding that the car-maker also sponsors many big events. Meanwhile, Supercars CEO Sean Seamer says it had already been holding discussions with a number of car brands following General Motors’ decision in late 2019 to discontinue the Commodore. Warburton notes that there has been a shift in the focus of Supercars to the racing teams rather than the traditional Holden-Ford rivalry.

Roy Morgan unveils Annual Customer Satisfaction Award winners across all categories

Roy Morgan has announced the winners of its annual Customer Satisfaction Awards for Australia. At first glance, the winners of the 2019 awards have little in common. Some are national names, others are state-wide favourites; they provide services ranging from meals on the go to mortgages and sell everything from fan belts to frozen peas. But, says Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine, they share one distinguishing factor: a determination to understand what their customers need and deliver it. The data that determines who wins comes from Roy Morgan’s massive Single Source survey, for which 50,000 consumers from all around Australia are interviewed in-depth each year, in person and in their own homes. Respondents name the companies they deal within various categories across 32 industries, including Automotive, Banking, Supermarket and Telecommunications, and rate how satisfied they are with them. Monthly Customer Satisfaction winners are cited in each category throughout the year, with the annual award going to the company with the most of these wins. While no-one scored a clean sweep of the monthly awards, an impressive number of companies came close. Ahm, Bunnings, Commonwealth Bank, Defence Health, Foodland, Powershop, Qantas, Rebel, RAC, the Reject Shop and Subway all won 11 of the 12 months, putting them far out of reach of their competitors.

Seven slumps on downgrade

Seven West Media has posted a 2018-19 interim net loss of $66.3m, with underlying EBIT down 21 per cent at $119.7 and revenue falling 3.2 per cent to $771.7m. The media group advised that its full-year earnings will be 13 per cent lower than previously forecast amid challenging condition in the advertising market, while CEO James Warburton has flagged the potential for "transformative" mergers and acquisitions. Seven will seek to reduce costs by 20 per cent in the second half, and it will consider asset sales.

Reserve Bank wary of risks from low rates

The minutes of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s board meeting for February show that the central bank considered the potential downside risks of further easing monetary policy when it left interest rates on hold. The board also noted that the coronavirus outbreak presents a risk to the economic outlook for both China and Australia in the near-term. Most economists expect an official interest rate cut in April or May, and the futures market has fully priced in a rate cut by October.

Qantas fends off unfair pay claims from aircraft engineers’ union

Qantas has won a lengthy legal dispute with the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers’ Association regarding how much it pays its engineers when they have additional training and qualifications. The Federal Court ruled it was Qantas to decide when and how it recognised extra certificates secured by its engineers, and it was not obliged to pay them more in such circumstances unless it met criteria under the relevant industrial agreement. It is the second time in two years that the Federal Court has dismissed a challenge by the ALAEA against Qantas on the issue of pay for extra training and qualifications.

Home loans lift on property recovery

A report from Deloitte notes that there was a seven per cent decline in new mortgage settlements in 2019. However, the latest edition of its Australian Mortgage Report shows that lenders and brokers expect a 2-3 per cent increase in mortgage settlements in 2020. Heather Baister of Deloitte says mid-tier lenders such as Macquarie and Citibank could benefit the most from the expected upturn in settlements.

National Party leader Michael McCormack has downplayed suggestions that he will step aside before the next federal election. McCormack says he has the full support of Prime Minister Scott Morrison and will lead the Nationals into the election. Former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce also says McCormack will still be leader at the election, adding that he accepts the partyroom’s decision to reject his recent bid for a spill.

Facebook admits Russia error

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has called for greater regulation of harmful content on the internet while speaking at the Munich Security Conference. Zuckerberg conceded that the social media company had been tardy in understanding Russian disinformation campaigns during the 2016 US presidential election campaign, while he said that purveyors of disinformation are becoming better at "covering their tracks". Zuckerberg added that Facebook has 35,000 people working on content and security reviews, and that it takes down more than one million fake accounts each day.

Ten bounces back from Big Bash League loss

New figures show that the Ten Network increased its share of the free-to-air TV advertising market by four percentage points in January, to 20.5 per cent. Ten’s share of advertising revenue fell to 16.4 per cent in January 2019, due to factors such as the loss of the Big Bash League broadcasting rights. This compares with 27.9 per cent in 2018, which was its last year as the BBL’s free-to-air broadcaster. The Nine and Seven networks’ share of ad revenue was 42.7 per cent and 36.9 per cent respectively in January.

Boris tells BBC licence fee will be scrapped

The UK government proposes to overhaul the funding arrangements for the BBC by introducing a subscription fee instead of the traditional licence fee. However, BBC chairman Sir David Clementi warns that the move could result in some popular TV shows being cancelled, as well as less public service programming. The government’s proposals also include reducing the number of TV stations operated by the BBC, selling most of its radio stations and greater investment in the BBC World Service.
