Rugby blows its Fox Sports deal

Negotiations between Rugby Australia and Fox Sports for a new broadcasting rights deal have broken deal, with the pay-TV provider choosing not to renew the deal. The current five-year deal is worth $57m a year and is set to expire at the end of 2020. Rugby Australia is expected to seek a broadcasting rights deal with Optus; the Ten Network, which is Fox Sports’ broadcast partner, may continue to show some matches on free-to-air TV. Fox Sports has held the rugby broadcasting rights since 1996.

Ports beef up virus protections

Australia’s iron ore and coal shipments may face delays due to the coronavirus outbreak. Ports have been advised to prevent Chinese vessels from docking unless they have been at sea for at least 14 days. However, the sailing time between China and Australia’s largest ports can be as little as 10 days. The impact of the virus on exporters has been limited to date, as the outbreak has coincided with the Lunar New Year holiday period. Meanwhile, the Health Department has ordered marine pilots to wear surgical masks and gloves when they board vessels that have come from China.

Rio joins Telstra in supplier backflip

Rio Tinto CFO Simon Trott has advised that about 90 per cent of its Australian suppliers will now be paid within 20 days. Businesses with annual turnover of up to $10m will also now be designated as a small supplier, rather than just those which supply up to $1m worth of goods and services to the resources giant each year. Rio Tinto recently shelved its ‘dynamic discounting’ scheme, while Telstra has also reduced its payment terms to just 20 days. Small Business & Family Enterprises Ombudsman Kate Carnell says other large companies should do so.

Mines, hotels to host evacuees

The death toll from the coronavirus has risen to 492, and more than 24,000 people have now contracted the respiratory illness, including 14 in Australia. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has warned that more Australian citizens and permanent residents will probably need to be evacuated from China. He adds that the federal government may quarantine future evacuees in hotels and mining camps if the Christmas Island facility reaches capacity. Meanwhile, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has told his state counterparts that the virus’s impact on the domestic economy could exceed that of the SARS outbreak in 2003.

Bandt abused PM with deaths claim

Adam Bandt has stepped up his attack on the federal government’s environmental credentials after being elected unopposed as the new leader of the Greens. He has claimed that the Coalition’s climate change policy will result in many more deaths than the recent bushfires, as it will result in a 3-degree temperature increase. Bandt also contends that the business models of fossil fuel producers are unsustainable, and he has called for domestic coal-fired power generation and coal exports to be phased out by 2030. Larissa Waters and Nick McKim are the new joint deputy leaders of the Greens.

The media industry’s Right to Know coalition has used a submission to a review of Australia’s uniform defamation laws to advocate greater protection for public-interest journalism. The coalition argues that public interest in freedom of expression should be one of the factors that courts must consider as part of a defence to defamation claims. It has also called for an overhaul of the maximum payouts that apply in defamation cases.

Travel ban ‘won’t be turned off’

Health Minister Greg Hunt has indicated that the federal government is likely to extend its ban on non-citizens entering Australia from the Chinese mainland, which was initially slated to last for two weeks. Wang Xining, the China’s deputy ambassador to Australia, has described it as an over-reaction and notes that the World Health Organization believes that such measures are not necessary. Wang adds that the Chinese embassy was not advised of the travel ban before it was announced, but Hunt says that senior officials in China were told of the ban as soon as the government decided to impose it.

Michel’s leads coffee shop customer satisfaction ahead of Donut King and Starbucks

Michel’s is the winner of Roy Morgan’s latest Coffee Shop of the Month Award, with a customer satisfaction rating of 87.3%. It is followed by Donut King (86.6%), Starbucks Coffee (84.5%) and The Coffee Club (83.8%). These customer satisfaction ratings have been obtained from the Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which is compiled by in-depth face-to-face interviews with around 50,000 Australians each year in their homes. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says the Customer Satisfaction Awards are about rewarding businesses that are able to not only attain high customer satisfaction ratings, but are able to sustain those ratings for long periods of time, despite any commercial challenges they may face.

Business Confidence drops to 9 year low of 101.6 in January

In Australia, Business Confidence fell 2.9pts (-2.8%) to a nearly nine-year low of 101.6 in January 2020, according to the latest Roy Morgan Business Single Source survey. Business Confidence is now 4.3pts lower than a year ago, and 13.6pts below the long-term average of 115.2. Only 34.5% (down 6.4ppts) of business leaders say their business is ‘better off financially’ compared to a year ago, and 44% (down 6.4ppts) expect their business to be ‘better off financially’ this time next year. Business Confidence is down on a year ago for businesses of all sizes, but the most pronounced decline is for large businesses with 200+ employees, down 18.4pts to 111.2. The latest Roy Morgan Business Confidence results for January are based on 923 detailed interviews with a cross-section of Australian businesses from each State and Territory.
