ACMA probes Gordon’s Prime shares

WIN Corporation owner Bruce Gordon currently has a 19.7 per cent stake in rival regional TV broadcaster Prime Media Group. This comprises a direct stake of 11.6 per cent and an 8.1 per cent stake held via a cash-settled share swap. The Australian Communications & Media Authority is investigating Gordon after his ‘relevant interest’ in Prime exceeded the maximum of 20 per cent earlier in 2019. However, ACMA is expected to conclude that the breach was an error caused by the failure of a middleman to properly execute a swap with Swiss bank Vontobel.

Tweaking will not protect journalists

Attorney-General Christian Porter is at odds with Law Council president Arthur Moses over a ministerial directive that allows him to veto prosecutions against journalists over reports that may breach secrecy laws. Porter’s ministerial directive also seemingly contradicts one issued by Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton in early August, in the wake of the Australian Federal Police’s media raids. Porter’s ministerial directive could potentially enable him to kill off AFP cases against media companies and journalists that have been sanctioned by Dutton.

Nine to seal Macquarie deal as Carnegie sells out for $9m

Original article by Max Mason
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 19 : 4-Oct-19

Venture capitalist Mark Carnegie is believed to have agreed to sell his 3.6 per cent stake in Macquarie Media to Nine Entertainment Company. This would put Nine over the 90 per cent threshold for the compulsory acquisition of the radio stations owner. Wilson Asset Management chairman Geoff Wilson, who has a 4.7 per cent stake in Macquarie, is continuing to push for a better offer for small shareholders; he contends that Nine’s $1.46-per-share bid undervalues the target.

The Coalition’s unexpected federal election win has seen Prime Minister Scott Morrison retain top ranking in AFR Magazine’s 2019 Power List. Morrison had been ranked first in 2018 by virtue of the fact that he succeeded Malcolm Turnbull shortly before the list was finalised. Labor leader Anthony Albanese is ranked fifth in the 2019 Power List, behind Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Reserve Bank governor Philip Lowe.

Original article by Matthew Cranston
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 10 : 4-Oct-19

Official figures show that Australia recorded a trade surplus of $5.9bn in August, compared with a record $8bn in June. The total value of exports of goods and services fell by $1.4bn in August, and imports fell by $137m. A downturn in the price of iron and coal was the major contributor to the lower trade surplus. The value of iron ore exports declined by 12 per cent during the month, with the price of the steel input falling from a peak of $US120 per tonne to $US91. However, iron ore export volumes increased by 15 per cent.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has spoken of his concern regarding a new order that seeks to give global institutions authority over individual countries in terms of dictating their national policies. Morrison was speaking at the Lowy Institute on 3 October, saying that he needs to focus more on international forces that are shaping Australia’s future. Morrison also said he will visit Indonesia in November for the inauguration of President Joko Widodo, and that he will visit India and Japan in early 2020.

Savers do it tough as banks hold off cuts

Original article by Jonathan Shapiro, Aleks Vickovich, Jemima Whyte
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 4 : 4-Oct-19

People who rely on interest income from their savings have been hard hit by the Reserve Bank of Australia’s aggressive monetary policy easing. Canstar notes that banks’ 12-month deposit rates have traditionally been about one per cent higher than the cash rate, but this has narrowed to 0.64 per cent. Term deposit rates and online savings account rates have both fallen sharply since the first of three official interest rate cuts in June, and Canstar’s Steve Mickenbecker says there is little scope for further reductions.
