BHP grade issues at Pilbara mines cloud the outlook for iron ore

Original article by Nick Toscano
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: Online : 19-Aug-19

BHP recently advised that the iron content of its ‘Jimblebar Fines’ iron ore product will fall from 61 per cent to 59.5 per cent during 2019-20. Jimblebar Fines accounts for around 15 per cent of BHP’s iron ore sales from Western Australia, with most of its Pilbara output being exported to China. Industry observers indicate that the iron content downgrade is partly the result of problems with BHP’s fleet of autonomous trucks, which has required it to mine in pits with lower-quality ore.

Baby Boomers put squeeze on the young

Original article by John Kehoe
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 8 : 19-Aug-19

The Grattan Institute contends that people aged 40 contribute twice as much in tax to support older Australians than Baby Boomers did at the same age, after adjusting for inflation. The percentage of households over the age of 65 that pay tax has fallen from 27 per cent in the mid-1990s to 17 per cent, while the Grattan Institute notes that the wealth of households under the age of 35 has barely changed since 2004. It puts forward a number of suggestions to address this intergenerational divide, including taxing superannuation earnings in retirement at 15 per cent and lifting the pension age.

ASIC to sue big banks in weeks

Original article by John Durie
The Australian – Page: 17 : 19-Aug-19

The Australian Securities & Investments Commission’s deputy chairman Daniel Crennan says it will shortly commence legal action against the four major banks, plus AMP and Macquarie Group. He adds that ASIC is still working on 13 matters that were referred to it by the Hayne royal commission, as well as a further 39 matters that were examined by the inquiry. Meanwhile, ASIC’s latest enforcement update shows that it accepted just one court-enforceable undertaking in the first half of 2019, compared with nine in the second half of 2018. ASIC’s reluctance to pursue litigation came under scrutiny by royal commissioner Kenneth Hayne.

China threat: bolster Top End

Original article by Geoff Chambers
The Australian – Page: 1 & 2 : 19-Aug-19

A report to be released by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute on 19 August suggests that there is a growing gap between Australia’s strategic policy and its military assets in the northern part of the nation. The report’s release, which calls for a boost to defence capacity in that part of the country, will coincide with the release of a separate report from the United States Studies Centre that will argue that the US no longer "enjoys military primacy in the Indo-Pacific". The release of the two reports comes as China seeks to expand its defence and strategic presence in the region.

Tribeca Investment Partners’ Jun Bei Liu expects Seven West Media to announce weak earnings and writedowns when its 2018-19 financial results are released on 20 August. The media group had issued a profit warning in May, and the Seven Network’s audience share is currently 2.4 per cent lower year-on-year. In contrast, the Nine Network’s audience share has risen by 3.4 per cent. New Seven West CEO James Warburton has noted that the Seven Network has some "ageing formats"; data from OzTAM shows that ‘My Kitchen Rules’ and ‘House Rules’ in particular have lost significant audience share in recent years.
