The ANZ Bank has been progressively rebuilding its institutional banking business in Asia, which has been its key focus in the region since abandoning retail banking growth plans. ANZ now boasts about 6,500 institutional customers in Asia, compared with some 28,000 at its peak, while staff numbers in the region have been reduced from 8,000 to 6,000 and there was a 16 per cent reduction in costs during 2017-18.

The ABC was given a modest funding increase in the April 2019 Budget, to allow the public broadcaster to increase its newsgathering capacity in regional and rural areas. Acting MD David Anderson has welcomed the increased funding for the Enhanced News initiative, but he has criticised the decision to retain a freeze on overall funding for the next three years. He says this will require some difficult decisions regarding staffing and services, but Communications Minister Mitch Fifield argues that the ABC has greater funding certainty than any other Australian media organisation.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has used his Budget reply speech to advise that Labor will not support the second and third stages of the federal government’s income tax package. However, Labor will increase the low- and middle-income tax offset for people earning less than $37,000 year, while it will match the government’s rebate for those earning $48,000 to $90,000. Meanwhile, Labor will increase Medicare funding by $2.3bn over four years, in order to reduce the cost of cancer treatment and to list more cancer drugs on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme

Record trade surplus of $4.8b thanks to iron ore

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 5 : 4-Apr-19

New figures show that Australia’s trade surplus rose to a record $4.8bn in February, well ahead of analysts’ expectations of just $3.7bn. The result was boosted by an 11 per cent increase in the value of iron ore exports. Gareth Aird of the Commonwealth Bank expects commodity prices to rise further, and that the forecasts outlined in the April 2019 Budget will prove to be too conservative. Meanwhile, services exports rose by two per cent in February, while there was a one per cent decline in rural exports.

Woodside Petroleum CEO Peter Coleman has told the LNG 2019 conference in Shanghai that the industry can take a leading role in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Amongst other things, he says LNG can replace fuels that generate higher emissions, including in the road transport and shipping industries. Coleman also argued the case for a global price on carbon, but cautioned that policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions will fail if they are regarded as having a negative impact on jobs and prosperity.

Business Council of Australia CEO Jennifer Westacott has reiterated the need for corporate tax cuts in the wake of the April 2019 Budget. She has described Australia’s current two-tiered company tax system as "bizarre", and notes that other nations are reducing their corporate tax rate while Australia’s remains one of the world’s highest. Meanwhile, the Australian Retailers Association’s executive director Russell Zimmerman says consumer spending should receive an immediate boost from the federal government’s proposed increase in the low- and middle-income tax offset.

BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group are ramping up their investment in technology, including driverless trucks and automated drilling rigs. However, BHP executive Rag Udd has told a conference in Brisbane that Australia is underperforming with regard to the adoption of robotics. He said the nation has about 0.6 robots per thousand employees, compared with the OECD average of 1.61. Udd also argued that the growing tend toward technology in the mining sector creates new jobs and safer jobs rather than fewer jobs.

Legislation targeting social media companies for failing to remove violent content from their platforms is expected to be passed by the House of Representatives on 4 April. It was endorsed by the Senate on 3 April. Media industry executives have expressed concern that the proposed laws could extend beyond social media and impose criminal sanctions on traditional media companies for news reports that are broadcast on TV or on their websites. Attorney-General Christian Porter has stressed that the bill will only apply to video or audio content that is supplied by the perpetrator of a crime or terrorist attack.

Market backs rate cuts over fiscal stimulus

Original article by Sarah Turner
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 9 : 4-Apr-19

The April 2019 Budget has not had much impact on monetary policy expectations, with financial markets still pricing in two interest rate cuts by August 2020. Sally Auld of JP Morgan says the Budget’s fiscal stimulus measures are unlikely to completely offset the impact of factors such as the downturn in housing prices, slowing construction activity and weak growth in real incomes. Meanwhile, economists are more bearish about the economic growth outlook than the Treasury.
