Roy Morgan’s ‘Digital Payment Solutions Currency Report’ January 2019 shows that 1.59 million Australians aged +14 used a ‘buy-now-pay-later’ digital payment method in the last 12 months. Millennials accounted for 40.6% of ‘buy-now-pay-later’ users in the year to January 2019, followed by Gen Z (35.1%). These two generations combined account for 75.7% of the market, or 1.2 million consumers. The two oldest generations (baby boomers and pre-boomers) make very little use of the new ‘buy-now-pay-later’ systems, with a combined market share of only 5.2% (83,000). The report also shows that awareness of these new payment methods is a healthy 42.9%, well ahead of the overall usage levels of 7.7%. Afterpay had 39.9% awareness and 6.9% usage over the last 12 months, well ahead of zipPay with 19.0% awareness and 1.6% usage. The data from this report is from Roy Morgan’s Single Source survey, which is based on in-depth interviews conducted face-to-face with over 50,000 consumers per annum in their homes.

Watchdog targets Google’s advertising

Australian Competition & Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims has told the ThinkTV conference that he wants advertising technology companies such as Google to be more transparent about their pricing. Sims says insufficient transparency means advertisers are unsure what they are paying for, and that higher advertising prices are passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services. Gary Nissim, the founder and MD of search agency Indago Digital, says there is still uncertainty as to how Google calculates cost per click and how its algorithms work.

Foxtel is offering selected customers in Queensland a free upgrade to the iQ4 set-top box, which provides access to 4K content. The offer can be redeemed at Harvey Norman stores or by calling Foxtel, and it is expected to be extended to customers in other regions. Meanwhile, some Foxtel subscribers are being offered 12 months’ free access to its movies package, which usually costs $20 per month. The initiatives are part of a strategy to target premium subscribers, who might otherwise opt to scale back their package in favour of Foxtel’s Kayo Sports streaming service.

Labor tax breaks not enough

Original article by John Kehoe
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 8 : 18-Mar-19

Canadian economist Jack Mintz has produced a report on behalf of the Minerals Council of Australia. He concludes that reducing the company tax rate from 30 per cent to 25 per cent would do more to ensure that the nation remains internationally competitive than Labor’s proposal to provide businesses with a 20 per cent tax write-off for capital expenditure exceeding $20,000. The report also argues that the manufacturing sector would gain more benefit from Labor’s policy than industries such as mining.

Original article by Max Mason
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 18-Mar-19

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for social media platforms to suspend live streaming in the wake of the Christchurch terrorist attack. Brenton Tarrant used Facebook to live stream his attack, and versions of his video were then seen on Twitter and YouTube. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have blocked and removed hundreds of versions of the video, while Facebook took down 1.5 million videos of the footage within 24 hours of the attack. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she intends to take up the issue of live streaming with Facebook directly.

As decision looms, BHP’s potash passion play fades – for now

Original article by James Thomson
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 17 & 22 : 18-Mar-19

It is estimated that commencing production at BHP’s Jansen potash project in Canada will require a capital investment of about $US5bn ($7bn). BHP has yet to make a firm commitment to the project, and observers say the resources group cannot continue to postpone a decision indefinitely. On one hand, potash is likely to be a boom commodity in coming years as demand for agricultural crops in regions such as Asia grows. However, the Jansen project will deliver relatively low returns for BHP investors, while global supply of potash is increasing.

Risky bet tax cuts tip for budget

Original article by John Kehoe
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 8 : 18-Mar-19

A report from Deloitte Access Economics suggests that there is scope for the federal government to include tax cuts of up to $12bn a year in the April 2019 Budget. The government has previously committed to $144bn worth of personal income tax cuts over six years, and Chris Richardson of Deloitte Access Economics says one option would be to bring forward these tax cuts by three years. Shane Oliver of AMP Capital Investors agrees that the Budget could feature tax cuts, saying it would be unlikely to affect the timing of a return to a surplus.

Hayne incites confusion over financial industry codes

Original article by John Kehoe
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 2 : 18-Mar-19

Financial services industry codes have been designed by industry bodies such as the Australian Banking Association and the Financial Services Council. The banking code is enforceable through contracts between banks and customers, but codes covering non-banking financial services are not legally or contractually enforceable. One of the Hayne royal commission’s recommendations was that industry codes should be more legally enforceable, but governments, regulators and industry bodies are uncertain as to how to implement the recommendation.
