Rio Tinto CEO Jean-Sebastien Jacques is confident a copper mine will be constructed at the site of its discovery in Western Australia’s Paterson Ranges. However, Jacques said he is unsure whether it will be Rio Tinto that builds that mine. Jacques was speaking at the official opening of its new $2.6 billion Arum bauxite mine on Cape York. Jacques said much more drilling needs to be undertaken at its copper discovery in WA to determine what lies beneath the surface.

Jones saga puts heat on Macquarie

Macquarie Media has refused to comment on its negotiations with Alan Jones over a new contract for the radio broadcaster, as has Jones himself. Jones has had 216 consecutive rating wins for his broadcasting spot, while his radio station 2GB won survey eight of Sydney’s 2018 ratings surveys with a 14.1 per cent audience share. Not being able to re-sign Jones would mean reduced advertising revenue for Macquarie Media, as well as more angst for Macquarie Media’s parent company Nine Entertainment, following the axing of Karl Stefanovic from ‘Today’ in 2018.

Mobile Virtual Network Operators taking market share from Mobile Networks

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 11-Mar-19

Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) are continuing to take market share from the traditional Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in the prepaid mobile market, according to the latest research from Roy Morgan. Over 6.7 million Australians (32.6%) now have a prepaid mobile phone, and a rising share of these prepaid mobile phones are bought via a MVNO, such as those operated by the likes of Aldi Mobile, Amaysim, Kogan, Boost, Lebara, Lycamobile. MVNOs are now used by nearly 2 million Australians, or 29.4% of consumers who have a prepaid mobile phone. This market penetration for MVNOs is up a significant 2.5ppts in the last year alone, and up by 6.3ppts from four years ago in the six months to July 2014. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says the increased market share taken by MVNOs in the prepaid mobile market is driven by a range of factors, including Australians looking for a better phone deal.

A PwC report has concluded that Australia’s manufacturing, education and resources sectors are amongst those that could benefit from the US-China trade war. The report suggests that the domestic economy could potentially be bolstered by up to $2bn a year if the trade tensions continue. PwC economist Jeremy Thorpe says local businesses should be looking at how they can capitalise on any trade opportunities that may arise as a result of the tensions between the US and China.

The federal government has rejected a bid by six National Party MPs to revive its "big stick" legislation prior to the upcoming election. The bill to force energy companies to divest assets if they fail to reduce electricity price was recently put on hold. The Nationals MPs also want the government to commit to underwriting a new power generation project in regional Queensland before the election. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the April 2019 Budget and flood relief measures for Queensland are his legislative priorities.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten has committed to ensuring that the minimum wage is increased to become a living wage if Labor wins the federal election. Shorten and ACTU secretary Sally McManus have both expressed support for the Fair Work Commission continuing to have responsibility for setting a living wage, as well as the timeframe for transitioning from the minimum wage. Prime Minister Scott Morrison contends that economic growth rather than increased taxes is the best way to lift wages.

Google does not want new rules and penalties for failing to remove copyright-infringing content to be introduced. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission stated in its interim report on digital platforms that Australian rights holders struggle to get copyright-infringing content removed quickly from digital platforms, and recommended tougher rules in this area. Google contends that new regulations would harm Australia’s technology sector, as does lobby group StartUpAus.

Business Confidence virtually unchanged in February at 105.6

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 8-Mar-19

Roy Morgan Business Confidence was virtually unchanged at 105.6 (down 0.3 points) in February. However, the consecutive ratings under 110 represent the weakest start to a year in the history of the Index dating back to 2011, and follow a slowing of the Australian economy to a GDP growth rate of only 0.2% during the December quarter, the slowest quarterly growth since 2016. Business Confidence in February was 14.4pts below its level of a year ago, and 10.3pts below its long-term average of 115.9. However, some industries have started 2019 with high and increasing confidence, including mining, accommodation and food services, and transport, postal and warehousing. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says business confidence should improve in the second half of 2019, once the federal and New South Wales elections are out of the way.
