UBS upbeat Foxtel is pressing right buttons on Kayo launch

Foxtel launched its Kayo Sports streaming video service in November, allowing consumers to access it without the need for a pay-TV subscription. UBS believes that Kayo Sports could enable Foxtel to increase its market penetration, which has remained at around 30 per cent for the last decade. The UBS analysts concede that Kayo is likely to cannibalise Foxtel’s subscriber base, but they say that this will be offset by increased revenue and gross margins as Foxtel’s overall market penetration rises.

Shane Oliver of AMP Capital says residential property prices in Melbourne and Sydney could fall by up to 25 per cent from peak to trough. Oliver had previously flagged a potential fall of up to 20 per cent, and he has warned that the downturn in the housing market could impact on Australia’s economic growth. Oliver also expects the Reserve Bank to reduce the cash rate by 25 basis points in August and November, although he says weak economic data could prompt it to move sooner.

Original article by Nick Lenaghan
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 32 : 24-Jan-19

Citigroup has forecast a total return of five per cent for Australian real estate investment trusts in 2019. The sector delivered an overall return of 2.9 per cent in 2018, although Citi analysts note that the spread between the best and worst performers was the widest since the global financial crisis. Citi is bearish about the outlook for retail REITs, although the firm has upgraded its rating on several residential REITs to a ‘buy’.

Sources within the federal government have indicated that it may offer pre-election sweeteners to age pensioners and families in the form of one-off cash payments. The potential measure is said to be aimed at ensuring that people who will not directly benefit from the government’s income tax cuts package are not disadvantaged. The first stage of the tax package took effect at the start of 2018-19, but Labor has committed to scrapping the second and third stages it wins the 2019 election.

Casualisation of workforce falls, finds ABS

Original article by Tim Boyd
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 7 : 23-Jan-19

Official data shows that casual employees accounted for 22 per cent of the Australian workforce in May 2018, down from 22.6 per cent two years earlier. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ latest biennial employees earnings survey also shows that the number of employees totalled 10,647,200 in May 2018. Mark Wooden, the director of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey project, says the ABS survey provides an accurate reading on the number of casual employees as it interviews employers rather than workers.

Grant Schultz has resigned from the Liberal Party after being disendorsed as its candidate for the New South Wales seat of Gilmore at the upcoming federal election. He has criticised Prime Minister Scott Morrison for intervening in the pre-selection process, amid speculation that indigenous leader Warren Mundine will be selected as the Liberals’ candidate despite not yet being a member of the party. Schultz has flagged his intention to contest the seat as an independent. Mundine is a former national president of the Australian Labor Party.

Budget surplus on track, says Frydenberg

Original article by Lucas Baird
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 5 : 23-Jan-19

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg remains confident that the federal government will return the Budget to surplus in 2019-20. This is despite domestic and global headwinds, including the International Monetary Fund’s latest downgrade of its global economic growth forecast. Frydenberg also used a Sydney Institute speech to warn that the domestic economy cannot afford Labor’s proposed $200bn package of tax increases. He added that unlike Labor, the Coalition will increase health, education and infrastructure spending without increasing taxes.

AMP could face a board spill at its 2019 annual meeting under the ‘two strikes’ regime, after more than 61 per cent of votes cast at the 2018 meeting rejected its remuneration report. The election of chairman David Murray is also uncertain, with at least two institutional investors said to be planning to vote against the resolution. They include Hamish Carlisle of Merlon Capital Partners, who opposes the election of Murray and non-executive director John O’Sullivan.
