The Federal Opposition’s plan to abolish cash refunds for excess dividend imputation credits if it wins the next election has widespread support among bond fund managers. Elizabeth Moran of FIIG Securities says the dividend imputation system has prompted many investors to be highly exposed to risker asset classes; she notes that while bonds offer lower yields, they also offer less volatility. Australian Securitisation Forum CEO Chris Dalton agrees that Labor’s policy will make bonds more attractive to investors.

Original article by Simon Benson
The Australian – Page: 1 & 4 : 7-Nov-18

The federal government’s analysis of income and tax data for 2015-16 shows that 1.3 million Australians owned a negatively-geared investment property during that financial year. Some 640,000 people lived in seats held by the Coalition, while 570,000 were in seats held by Labor. Two Labor-held seats in the Australian Capital Territory had the highest number of people who used negative gearing. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says Labor’s proposed changes to the negative gearing regime will hit not only its own supporters, but all Australians who own a home.

The Reserve Bank of Australia is widely expected to leave official interest rates on hold at 1.5 per cent on 6 November. The central bank’s board will consider factors such as subdued wages growth, falling house prices and the high level of household debt in its monetary policy deliberations. The RBA has left the cash rate unchanged on Melbourne Cup Day every year since 2011, and the general consensus of economists is that rates will remain on hold in 2019.

Original article by Peter Ker
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 13 & 28 : 6-Nov-18

Adani recently gave indications that thermal coal from its Carmichael mine in Queensland is likely to boast energy content of around 5,500 kilocalories per kilogram. Rory Simington of Wood Mackenzie estimates that if the coal were offered to buyers at current market prices, it would be likely to fetch between $US50 and $U55 per tonne. This compares with $US106 per tonne at present for higher-grade coal from the Hunter Valley. Simington expects Adani’s coal to have an energy content of 4,800 kilocalories per kilogram, although he adds that washing the coal could increase this to around 5,500 kilocalories.
