CoreLogic’s latest data indicate that there is greater resilience in the more affordable segments of Australia’s residential property market. House prices in the bottom quarter of the Melbourne market rose by 4.1 per cent year-on-year, while they fell by just 3.3 per cent in Sydney’s bottom quartile. However, prices in Sydney and Melbourne’s top quartiles fell by 8.4 per cent and 6.7 per cent respectively. Tim Lawless of Corelogic says demand is becoming focused on the more affordable housing segments as banks become more cautious about borrowers taking on too much debt.

Labor threat to derail GST distribution law

Original article by Andrew Burrell, Matthew Denholm
The Australian – Page: 6 : 2-Oct-18

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that he will introduce legislation aimed at changing the way that goods and services tax revenue is distributed. He promised that no state would be worse off under his GST plan, but shadow treasurer Chris Bowen said he is concerned that Morrison’s proposed legislation does not state explicitly that this would be the case. Similarly, the Tasmanian Government wants an "enforceable guarantee" from the federal government that it will not be worse off under the proposed changes.

The Australian – Page: 3 : 2-Oct-18

The process for selecting ABC board members has come under scrutiny following the resignation of chairman Justin Milne. In announcing his appointment, the government had said that the independent nominations panel had recommended Milne for the role. However, former panel member Neil Brown says the panel had nominated five contenders and said they were all qualified for the role, but this had not constituted a recommendation. Brown notes that some ABC board members were also appointed despite not having been nominated by the panel. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says the next ABC chairman must have bipartisan support.

The banking royal commission’s interim report urged the Australian Securities & Investments Commission to be aggressive in enforcing the Banking Code of Conduct. Australian Small Business & Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell has backed the commission’s call for ASIC to be more proactive in enforcing the Banking Code of Conduct, while she has suggested that many small businesses will be disappointed by the commission’s interim report.

He says the risk of a credit crunch has been heightened following the release of the inquiry’s interim report. Mott adds that amongst other things, the final report is likely to recommend extending responsible lending obligations to small and medium enterprises and an overhaul of the way banks verify the expenses of borrowers.

Market Research Update – Page: Online : 2-Oct-18

Michele Levine, the CEO of researcher Roy Morgan, speaks to Your Money presenter Adam Creighton. She talks about issues such as Roy Morgan’s inaugural Wealth Report, including the increase in wealth in Australia over the last decade, as well as leading economic indicators such as ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence and Inflation Expectations. Levine also notes that research by Roy Morgan shows that Australians’ satisfaction with the nation’s banks has fallen slightly in the wake of the Finance Royal Commission; there has also been a rise in the level of distrust regarding both banks and a broader range of organisations, including health insurers and the media.

Export bonanza will not last long

Original article by Perry Williams
The Australian – Page: 17 & 20 : 2-Oct-18

Revenue from Australia’s commodity exports will increase by 11 per cent in 2018-19 to a record $252bn, according to the Department of Industry, Innovation & Science’s latest quarterly report. However, revenue is expected to decline by five per cent in 2019-20, to $238bn. Revenue from iron ore exports is tipped to total $60.4bn in 2018-19, before falling to $56bn in 2019-20, as factors such as an increase in global supply and lower steel production in China weigh on the iron ore price. Coal export revenue is also expected to fall in 2019-20, although strong growth in LNG export revenue is forecast.

Suppliers revolt over Woolies’ plan to cut data

Original article by Eli Greenblat
The Australian – Page: 19 : 1-Oct-18

Woolworths will make changes to the sales data it provides to suppliers as from 2019. The retailer states the data will be of a much broader nature, with intellectual property and competitive information being protected from being shared with rival companies. However, suppliers have expressed concern about the proposed changes, stating that not having access to specific sales data will leave them "defenceless" if Woolworths decides to stop stocking their products. They are also concerned that Woolworth’s private label brands will benefit from the changes.
