Australians have been warned to prepare for power blackouts after the federal government shelved its National Energy Guarantee. Rick Francis, the CEO of Spark Infrastructure, says not having an NEG means the energy sector lacks any "mechanism" to steer it through the transition to increased renewable energy generation. Stephen Bell, the CEO of petrochemicals producer Qenos, is disappointed that the federal government had chosen not to proceed with the NEG.

APRA prepares to approve three new banks

There is speculation that the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority could grant full banking licences to fintech start-ups Volt Bank, 86400 and Judo Capital by the end of 2018. They would be subject to the same capital requirements as other banks, while gaining the trust of consumers will be a challenge. However, they should benefit from a lack of legacy IT systems and branch networks, as well as negative sentiment toward traditional banks in the wake of the royal commission.

Former New South Wales premier Mike Baird is now regarded as the leading internal candidate to eventually succeed National Australia Bank CEO Andrew Thorburn. COO Antony Cahill had been seen as a potential successor, but he will leave the bank in mid-September to take up a role at Visa in the UK. Andrew Hagger was also regarded as a contender to replace Thorburn, but he attracted scrutiny by the banking royal commission over the fee-for-no-service scandal. External candidates are said to include former Westpac executive Jason Yetton.

US-based Motiv has declined to comment on reports that it has made an informal approach to acquire Fairfax Media’s events business, which Macquarie Equities values at about $60m. Fairfax’s proposed merger partner, Nine Entertainment Company, divested its own events business in 2015. A Nine spokeswoman says it is too soon to comment on potential asset sales. There has been speculation that Nine could divest other Fairfax assets, including its regional newspapers.

BCI Minerals plans to divest its iron ore assets in the Pilbara in order to focus on its salt and potash assets. Mineral Resources MD Chris Ellison has indicated that the company will not bid for the BCI assets, which could fetch around $100m, preferring to focus on its existing Pilbara assets. Mineral Resources recently secured a joint venture agreement regarding Brockman Mining’s Marillana project, while it bought the Koolyanobbing mine from Cleveland-Cliffs earlier in 2018.

BHP puts off potash mining plans

BHP Billiton advised in its 2017-18 full-year report that it now expects global demand for potash to exceed supply by the mid-to-late 2020s, having forecast in 2017 that there would be a demand-supply imbalance by the mid-2020s. As a result, the timeline for development of BHP’s Jansen potash deposit in Canada remains uncertain. BHP is close to completing two kilometre-deep shafts at the Jansen project in preparation for the commencement of mining, but the shafts will then be mothballed until market dynamics make development appropriate.

A whiff of optimism behind PE expanders

The average forward price-earnings multiple of the 25 most expensive stocks in the S&P/ASX 300 has risen by 9.8 per cent since these companies reported their latest financial results, while the PE multiple of the indice’s 25 cheapest stocks has contracted. Jason Steed of JP Morgan has attributed the PE expansion to factors such as momentum buying, short covering, deployment of high cash balances and the recent political uncertainty. Meanwhile, Steed notes that 30 per cent of the stocks that JP Morgan covers have exceeded expectations during the August reporting season, while 28 per cent have failed to meet expectations.

Addressable TV advertising technology already reaches over 9 million Australians

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 28-Aug-18

New research from Roy Morgan shows that over nine million Australians are already using the devices and services that addressable TV advertising technology requires, like smart TVs and streaming devices. However, broadcasters are only just starting to mature their own technologies and data stacks to be able to leverage connected devices such as smart TVs, streaming and set-top boxes to deliver personalised advertising. The services Australians already watch and that have the potential to deliver addressable TV today include Foxtel, Foxtel Now, Foxtel on Demand, Fetch, Google Play, 9Now, SBS on Demand, TENplay and 7Plus. Additional services that have the potential to deliver addressable TV but due to business decisions do not currently carry advertising and are watched by over 14.5 million Australians include Netflix, Stan, ABC iView, Quickflix, Ozflix, Bigpond movies, Dendy Direct, iTunes, Sports streaming, YouTube Premium and Amazon Prime Video. Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine says the increasingly fast rate at which Australians adopt a multitude of new technologies does give great hope to traditional broadcasters developing addressable TV as a viable competitor to newer digital-centred services. Australians have shown an increasing willingness to try out new technologies and all the evidence from the marketplace shows that if done correctly addressable TV can be a formidable step forward for traditional broadcasters.

Class action firm challenges CFMMEU

Original article by David Marin-Guzman
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 8 : 27-Aug-18

Class action law firm Adero Law is challenging an agreement involving the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining & Energy Union. The CFFMEU had secured a 2017 court decision to have an enterprise agreement provided by One Key Workforce, a mining subsidiary of labour hire firm Fircroft, deemed invalid. It has agreed not to pursue the decision if Fircroft pays its members $3.5 million to cover alleged underpayments and enters into an improved labour agreement with the CFMMEU. Adero Law contends that the deal with Fircroft is not in the interest of clients who are former One Key employees and who were not CFFMEU members. CFFMEU president Tony Maher says its agreement does not stop non-union One Key workers seeking compensation for underpayments.
