Renewable energy was responsible for just under 19 per cent of National Electricity Market generation in the year to June 2018, according to the Australia Institute. The figure includes rooftop solar generation, or 15.7 per cent if rooftop solar generation is not included. The Australia Institute claims that new solar and wind generation that is being built or committed to under the federal government’s Renewable Energy Target and the Victorian government’s RET would be sufficient for the former to meet its 2030 emissions target without the need for a National Energy Guarantee.

Low rates may trigger shock

Original article by Jacob Greber

Keeping official interest rates low for too long could have dire consequences, according to the Bank for International Settlements’ Committee on the Global Financial System. The committee warns that it could lead to a rise in inflation, which in turn would force central banks to hike up interest rates, resulting in a global recession. Under one scenario put forward by the committee, inflation could rise by two per cent, forcing central banks to lift short-term interest rates by 300 basis points. In Australia, this would result in economic growth falling to 0.5 per cent.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen has criticised the Federal Government’s proposal to provide the states and territories with top-up goods and services tax payments. Treasurer Scott Morrison said the GST payments will be funded via consolidated revenue, but Bowen has warned that the government could potentially reduce funding for hospitals and schools to finance the deal. The states are expected to endorse the changes, which aim to ensure that each state’s share of GST revenue does not fall below $0.75 in the dollar.

Pure play coal just doesn’t make the cut for UniSuper

Original article by Ben Potter
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 & 20 : 5-Jul-18

UniSuper’s Talieh Williams says the superannuation fund takes into account a range of factors when deciding whether to invest in a stock. UniSuper has relatively little exposure to the coal sector, and pure-play coal miners in particular, which she attributes to the super fund’s rigorous investment processes. Meanwhile, QSuper says it invests across the S&P/ASX 200 Index and therefore does have exposure to pure-play coal producers. Yancoal Australia recently blamed fund managers’ lack of interest in a capital raising for its proposal for a dual listing in Hong Kong.
