Small Business Council of Australia CEO Peter Strong says an analysis of data on the impact of tax cuts for businesses with turnover of up to $A2m strengthens the case for across-the-board corporate tax relief. The analysis by AlphaBeta shows that 19 per cent of businesses that received the tax cut in 2015 had hired additional staff in the following two years, while three per cent increased their employees’ wages. Companies that received the tax cut also created jobs at a faster pace than companies that were just above the turnover threshold.

Labor plan: spend and tax to bigger surpluses

Original article by Phillip Coorey
The Australian Financial Review – Page: 1 & 4 : 3-May-18

The Australian Labor Party will raise at least $A160bn in additional revenue over 10 years if it wins the next federal election. This would be boosted by $A35bn if Labor revoked company tax cuts that have yet to be legislated. Labor argues that the additional revenue would allow it to achieve a Budget surplus while increasing government spending in sectors such as health and education. Finance Minister Mathias Cormann has warned that Labor’s tax plan will have an adverse impact on jobs and investment.

Fairfax Media CEO Greg Hywood says the company is well-placed to capitalise on industry consolidation in the wake of cross-media ownership reforms. He has also argued that mergers between print and broadcasting companies are possible, although all interested parties would have to benefit from any such deal. Meanwhile, Fairfax has advised that group revenue fell by one per cent during the first 17 weeks of the second half of 2017-18; its Australian Metro Media division’s revenue was about two per cent lower than the same period in 2016-17.

Rio Tinto chairman Simon Thompson has conceded that the potential impact of climate change policy on the future value of coal assets contributed to its decision to divest its thermal coal assets in New South Wales. Rio Tinto sold the Hunter Valley coal assets for $US2.69bn ($A3.58bn) in 2017. Thompson also noted at the AGM that Rio Tinto is in the process of exiting fossil fuels completely, and he highlighted the company’s progress in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions.

Original article by Karen Maley

It has been revealed that AMP’s former CEO Andrew Mohl had approached acting chairman John Palmer about taking on the role of chairman following the sudden resignation of Simon McKeon in 2016. However, AMP’s board chose to appoint Catherine Brenner as chairman, and it did not even consider Mohl for the role. Brenner subsequently resigned in the wake of the banking royal commission’s revelations about misconduct at the financial services group.

Byres puts spotlight on incentives

The Australian Financial Review – Page: 15 & 18 : 3-May-18

Australian Prudential Regulation Authority chairman Wayne Byres has indicated that the structure of incentives in the financial services industry is currently a bigger concern for APRA than the level of remuneration. He notes that scandals in the sector have largely arisen when incentives have focused too much on growth and sales targets. Byres adds that although the general public’s trust in financial services providers has been tarnished by recent scandals in the sector, there is still a lot of trust in the underlying financial strength of such institutions.

Melbourne way ahead of Sydney as Airbnb hub

Original article by Roy Morgan
Market Research Update – Page: Online : 3-May-18

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey shows that 10.4% of Australians who travelled in the year to March 2018 stayed in rented houses or rented serviced apartments. Some 11.6% of people who visited Melbourne on their last trip stayed in either rented houses or rented serviced apartments, up 3% on a decade ago. In comparison, only 8.5% of people who visited Sydney on their last trip stayed in such accommodation, up 1.3% on 10 years ago. Roy Morgan executive chairman and Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Gary Morgan says Melbourne has seen a huge surge in apartments being used for Airbnb short-term accommodation over the last decade, and this has cut the value of apartments. Morgan says that as Lord Mayor he will ask the State Government to prevent apartments being used (and vandalised) by short-term visitors that downgrades the value of apartments and leads to a poorer overall amenity for the city and for residents in Melbourne.

Original article by Tessa Akerman
The Australian – Page: 1 & 6 : 2-May-18

The Melbourne Magistrates’ Court has committed Cardinal George Pell to stand trial on several charges of historic sex offences. They include alleged sexual assaults at a swimming pool in Ballarat in the 1970s and at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne in the 1990s. However, Magistrate Belinda Wallington struck out many of the charges against Cardinal Pell. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and has been released on bail. The barrister representing Cardinal Pell will seek to have each charge dealt with by a separate trial.
