Toyota’s Altona manufacturing plant in Melbourne will close on 3 October 2017, with the loss of 2,500 jobs. John Conomos, the former head of Toyota Australia, says the Japanese car-maker would have maintained a local manufacturing presence if Holden or Ford had also decided to remain in Australia. He adds that Toyota had been planning to build a third model in Australia, most likely a sports utility vehicle, when its rivals announced plans to end local production. Holden’s assembly plant in Adelaide will close on 20 October.

Future lies with autonomous cars: Ghosn

Original article by Andrew Whire
The Australian – Page: 17 & 20 : 6-Jun-17

Nissan Renault Alliance chairman Carlos Ghosn has rejected suggestions that growth in demand for autonomous and driverless cars will decimate the car industry. It has been claimed that such cars will lead to a significant drop in car ownership as people switch to ride-sharing. However, Ghosn does believe that autonomous cars will comprise a majority of all cars on the road by the end of 2022. He does not forsee much in the way of increased demand for electric cars in Australia without the introduction of government subsidies.

ASC, BAE Systems and Forgacs have begun shedding workers at their Australian shipyards in response to a lull in defence projects. The Federal Government has proposed a new strategy for the shipbuilding industry whereby new naval vessels will be continuously built over the next two decades, replacing older vessels as they are retired from service. The Australian Government will retain a $A500m industry assistance scheme for the local car industry, despite its impact on the Budget bottom line. It wants to ensure that automotive component makers remain financially viable until the local car manufacturing ends. GM Holden has indicated that the Government’s support for the scheme will increase the likelihood that the car maker will keep its plants open until the scheduled shutdown, while Toyota says it definitely will not close its plant before the end of 2017

John Camillo, South Australian secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union, has announced that its members have voted in favour of the new enterprise bargaining agreement (EBA) at GM Holden. It has been lodged with the Fair Work Commission, but is also likely to be the last EBA as the car maker will withdraw from local assembly by 2017. Until then wages will increase 3% per annum, and voluntary redundancy packages are being offered that consist of 3.5 weeks’ worth of pay for each year of service
