Linfox driven to be first adopter of electric truck technology

Linfox chairman Peter Fox says the trucking company is keen to investigate the use of electric trucks, particularly for its Armaguard business. Tesla has revealed plans for an electric truck that could run at maximum weight for 500 miles before needing to be recharged. Fox says there would need to be a lot more charging stations available before Linfox could consider using electric trucks, while he does not think that governments should subsidise the use of electric vehicles.

Legal loopholes exposed as cyclist runs down pedestrian at crossing

Original article by Eryk Bagshaw
The Sydney Morning Herald – Page: 8 : 12-Jan-15

There is no legal requirement in New South Wales (NSW) for cyclists to hold compulsory third party insurance. This has become an issue in a number of cases where these road users have collided with pedestrians, and the latter were then unable to claim for compensation after suffering serious injuries despite the other party having been at fault and charged with negligent driving. The NSW Motor Accidents Authority in 2013 advised Roads & Maritime Services against a proposed scheme under which an insurance levy would apply at the point of sale of new bicycles

Original article by Andrew Main
The Australian – Page: 22 : 27-Nov-14

Stockholders at the 26 November 2014 AGM of taxi fare payment services group Cabcharge rejected the remuneration report with a "no" vote of 57%. However the option to dismiss the entire board of directors, as this was the fourth year in succession for more than 25% to be opposed, was only backed by 2.1%. Meanwhile chair Russell Balding used his address to strongly criticise the Uber smartphone app business, especially its UberX service. He argued the arrangement under which private vehicle owners car share in exchange for payment was illegal

Brakes put on ‘illegal’ UberX ride-sharing

Original article by Ben Butler
The Australian – Page: 20 : 4-Nov-14

The Victorian Taxi Services Commission has issued a stop order to mobile telephone-based car bookings group Uber, applying to its UberX service rather than the more expensive Uber Black. The former variant allows members of the general public to offer vehicles as chauffeured cars, without being licensed. Uber so far appears to be ignoring the cease-and-desist letter written by the watchdog on 23 October 2014. Court action may follow, and would mean fines for the drivers of up to $A7,500 instead of just $A1,700
