Australian-listed SeaLink Travel Group is examining the feasibility of operating passenger ferries from Wyndham, Portarlington and Williamstown to the Docklands precinct in Melbourne. The group is working on the proposal with property developer and former Toll Holdings CEO Paul Little. SeaLink operates ferry services in South Australia and New South Wales.

Glencore baulks over port prices

Mining giant Glencore wants Australia’s National Competition Council to take action over a rise in shipping fees at the Port of Newcastle. It claims that navigation service charges for some ships have increased by around 60 per cent since the port was privatised in 2014. Glencore is pushing for the port to be "declared" under competition laws. There have also been demands for the Port of Melbourne to be regulated.

ACCC pushes for powers to intervene in ports rents row

Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) chairman Rod Sims has proposed extending its powers to cover regulation of the nation’s ports. Sims has suggested that the ACCC could step in to resolve pricing disputes between port owners and stevedoring groups. Sims recently discussed the issue with DP World Australia CEO Paul Scurrah, who supports giving the ACCC a greater role in regulating ports but does not believe that full regulation is necessary

A Roy Morgan Single Source survey, which was carried out in the year to September 2014, has found that around 70 per cent of Australians aged 14+ who work in the Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane CBD have noticed public transport advertising in the last seven days. This includes ads inside or on the side of buses, trains, ferries and trams, at train stations, on platforms and in shelters. Meanwhile, around 65 per cent of CBD workers in Adelaide and 60 per cent in Perth reported seeing public transport ads in the past week

Vale China deal puts Rio, BHP on notice

Shipping laws ‘take toll’ on refineries

An Australian Maritime Safety Authority event on 12 November 2014 will be addressed by Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss. He will argue that industries such as petroleum refining are being negatively affected by the cabotage regulations rolled out under the previous federal government’s Coastal Trading Act. Truss will claim that the added cost per vessel and per annum is $A6.5m. Refining in Australia is in decline, with just five major operations left and some four fifths of all fuel and crude already being imported

MUA strike threatens Gorgon gas project

Talks on a new enterprise bargaining agreement between Mermaid Marine and the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) have become deadlocked, triggering a strike. The MUA says members will take protected industrial action for five days from 15 October 2014. A 10-day strike had been cancelled by the MUA in July, when it appeared that progress could be made. Among the operations that could be affected are the Gorgon LNG project and iron ore shipments by BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group

Dredge waste to go onshore

The Queensland Government has signed an agreement with Indian companies Adani and GVK for the use of an onshore site for dredge waste. The land was formerly owned by BHP Billiton. The construction of the Abbot Point coal terminal is expected to involve the disposal of three million cubic metres of dredge waste at the site. Initially, the companies planned to dump the waste in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef area
